Job description

We are seeking a passionate and innovative World Language teacher to join our team at FlexTech High School - Shepherd who wants to do school differently. This is not a traditional teaching role.

FlexTech is a small, project-based high school built around strong relationships, real-world learning, and student independence. Our teachers act as advisors, mentors, and collaborators. They guide students through personalized, competency-based learning rather than delivering one-size-fits-all instruction.

The ideal candidate believes all students can succeed and learn a language other than English in the right environment and is excited to design meaningful, project based learning experiences that connect to the real world. This role requires flexibility, creativity, and a willingness to work closely with students in both small groups and one-on-one settings.

If you are passionate about speaking foreign languages and teaching the language and culture of other people, and if you care deeply about building strong relationships, collaborating with a team, rethinking what high school can look like, and making learning more relevant for students, we’d love to have you join us.

Responsibilities:

Essential Duties:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive lesson plans that meet the curriculum standards and cater to diverse learning styles.

  • Incorporate cultural activities and resources to enhance language learning and promote an appreciation of different cultures.

  • Develop assessments and monitor student performance through various methods, including tests, quizzes, projects, and presentations.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to align curricula and participate in ongoing professional development initiatives.

  • Participate in school activities, meetings, and events to contribute to the overall mission of the institution.

  • Maintain a safe and positive environment for all students

  • Maintain effective communication with students, parents, and school staff

  • Regular and predictable attendance

Cognitive Demands:

  • Supervision of multiple students at once

  • Establishing routines and procedures

  • Maintaining a safe and orderly environment

  • Create and implement instructional plans

  • Participate in continuous professional development

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

Physical Demands:

  • Occasionally lift/move objects weighing up to 25lbs

  • Stand and walk frequently

  • Occasionally sit on the floor or bend down/squat

  • Withstand all demands presented by outside weather conditions at any time of the year

  • Withstand a moderate noise level

  • Be able to perform first aid/CPR if necessary

  • Assist/lift students, as necessary

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Linguistics, ASL or another World Language, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus.

  • Valid teaching certification/license in Michigan for secondary education with an endorsement in the subject.

  • Proficiency in ASL/World Language and English, with excellent communication skills in both languages.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in planning and assessing educational activities.

Company Benefits:

  • Health Insurance: Medical, Vision, & Dental Plans

  • 5% 401(k) company contribution

  • 1% 401(k) company match

  • Life, ADD, STD, LTD 100% paid by the employer

  • Voluntary Plans Available
