What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Working Ranch Hand, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Working Ranch Hand, you need practical knowledge of livestock care, basic veterinary skills, equipment operation, and general ranch maintenance, often gained through hands-on experience or agricultural training. Familiarity with tools like tractors, fencing equipment, ATVs, and sometimes certification in animal handling or first aid is beneficial. Strong work ethic, adaptability, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help individuals excel in dynamic, outdoor environments. These competencies are crucial for ensuring animal welfare, operational efficiency, and safety on a working ranch.

What are some common challenges faced by employees working on a ranch, and how can they be addressed?

Working on a ranch often involves long hours in varying weather conditions, physically demanding tasks, and the need to adapt quickly to unexpected situations such as animal health issues or equipment breakdowns. Teamwork and clear communication are essential for safety and efficiency, as many tasks require coordination with other workers. Building resilience, staying organized, and being proactive about equipment maintenance can help address these challenges. Additionally, seeking mentorship from experienced ranch hands can provide valuable insights and support.

What is a working ranch?

A working ranch is a type of agricultural property where livestock such as cattle, horses, or sheep are raised and managed as part of daily operations. Unlike guest or dude ranches, working ranches focus primarily on traditional ranching activities, including animal husbandry, land management, and crop production. Workers on a ranch may perform tasks such as feeding animals, maintaining fences, repairing equipment, and assisting with breeding or calving. These ranches play a vital role in food production and rural economies. Working ranches can also offer hands-on experiences for those interested in learning about the ranching lifestyle.

Job description

Ranch Hand - Facilities & Grounds Host Location: Dripping Springs, Texas Type: Full-Time, Onsite The Role This is not a typical facilities job. We are looking for someone who takes pride in caring for land, tools, and places where people gather to have meaningful, joyful experiences. This role sits at the intersection of facilities, hospitality, and outdoor sport-supporting shotgun courses, pistol and archery ranges, fisheries, and soon gardens, livestock, and additional land-based projects. You'll spend your days outside, working with your hands, solving practical problems, shaping beautiful spaces, and interacting with members and guests who want to be here. If you enjoy physical work, variety, responsibility, and being part of a tight-knit team on exceptional land, this role can be incredibly rewarding. What Day-to-Day Looks Like No two days are the same, but responsibilities commonly include:
  • Maintaining cleanliness, safety, and overall hygiene across outdoor facilities
  • Setting and maintaining shotgun courses and shooting stations
  • Supporting pistol and archery range readiness and upkeep
  • Pistol and shotgun instruction (if able)
  • Assisting with fishery care and land stewardship projects
  • Helping bring new initiatives online (gardens, livestock, special builds)
  • Greeting members and guests with warmth and professionalism
  • Assisting instructors, events, and special projects as needed
  • Identifying maintenance needs and proactively addressing them
This role is hands-on, active, and outdoors-focused. Who This Role Is For You might be a great fit if you:
  • Enjoy working outside and take pride in well-kept land and facilities
  • Like practical work, problem-solving, and seeing tangible results
  • Are comfortable interacting with people and representing a premium brand
  • Value teamwork, reliability, and personal accountability
  • Appreciate structure but enjoy variety and autonomy
  • Take safety seriously and understand the importance of detail
Experience with outdoor facilities, ranch work, ranges, or hospitality is a plus-but mindset matters more than resume bullets. What We Offer
  • Work on beautiful Hill Country land every day
  • A positive, respectful, and mission-driven team environment
  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Company lifestyle benefits and access to unique experiences
  • Long-term growth opportunities as our facilities expand
Why This Role Matters Our facilities are the foundation of the experience we offer. This role helps ensure that everything feels intentional, safe, clean, and welcoming-so members and guests can focus on enjoying the land, the sport, and the community. If you're someone who finds satisfaction in doing real work in a meaningful place, this could be a rare and special opportunity.
