What is a Workday Payroll specialist?

A Workday Payroll specialist is a professional who manages and processes payroll operations using the Workday Human Capital Management (HCM) software. They are responsible for configuring payroll systems, ensuring compliance with tax laws, processing employee payments, and resolving payroll-related issues. These specialists work closely with HR and finance teams to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing. Their expertise helps organizations streamline payroll workflows and maintain accurate employee compensation records.

Job description

Job Title: Workday Payroll ConsultantJob Description
This role focuses on serving as a highly experienced Workday Payroll Consultant supporting a large-scale Workday implementation initiative. You will act as a key subject matter expert, bridging payroll data, processes, and reporting between Workday and PeopleSoft while driving testing, validation, and implementation activities. You will join a complex enterprise environment that is working through more than 3,000 payroll-related scenarios leading up to go-live, and you will be expected to contribute immediately with minimal ramp-up time. This is a fully remote, high-visibility project where you will help transform payroll operations at a large, billion-dollar organization and partner closely with key stakeholders to shape future-state processes.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary subject matter expert for payroll-related data, processes, and reporting across Workday and PeopleSoft.
  • Support Workday Payroll implementation activities from planning through go-live, ensuring a smooth transition from legacy systems.
  • Analyze, validate, and reconcile payroll data between legacy PeopleSoft and future-state Workday systems, including large volumes of employee and payroll information.
  • Assist with comprehensive testing efforts, including unit testing, parallel testing, user acceptance testing (UAT), and detailed payroll validation.
  • Support the execution of more than 3,000 payroll scenarios and troubleshoot issues as they arise during testing and pre-go-live activities.
  • Partner closely with payroll, HRIS, finance, IT, and implementation teams to identify, investigate, and resolve payroll issues and discrepancies.
  • Identify and document payroll process gaps, system discrepancies, and areas for improvement across both Workday and PeopleSoft environments.
  • Facilitate data conversion activities, ensuring accurate mapping, transformation, and validation of payroll data from PeopleSoft to Workday.
  • Provide recommendations on payroll best practices, controls, and process improvements to support a robust and compliant Workday Payroll implementation.
  • Contribute to cutover planning, including readiness assessments, risk identification, and execution support for go-live activities.
  • Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, translating complex payroll and system concepts into clear, actionable information.
  • Work independently in a fast-paced project environment, proactively managing priorities and delivering high-quality work with minimal supervision.
Essential Skills
  • At least 5 years of experience working with payroll systems in complex enterprise environments.
  • Hands-on Workday Payroll implementation experience covering planning, configuration, testing, validation, and go-live support.
  • Strong PeopleSoft payroll experience, including deep familiarity with payroll data structures, processes, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting payroll testing and validation efforts, including unit, parallel, and UAT testing.
  • Proven ability to analyze, validate, and reconcile large volumes of payroll data across multiple systems.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently in a fast-paced, high-visibility project environment.
  • Comfort working within complex enterprise organizations and navigating multiple stakeholder groups.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with multiple Workday Payroll implementations, ideally in large or global organizations.
  • Prior experience migrating payroll operations from PeopleSoft to Workday.
  • Knowledge of payroll tax regulations, wage and hour compliance requirements, and payroll accounting principles.
  • Experience supporting large employee populations and high-volume payroll processing.
  • Previous consulting experience, particularly in HRIS or payroll system implementation projects.
  • Ability to provide strategic input on payroll process design and best practices during system transformation.
Work Environment
This role operates in a 100% remote work environment, providing flexibility while supporting a large, complex enterprise undergoing a major payroll transformation. You will collaborate closely with payroll accounting leadership, IT teams, HRIS professionals, and payroll stakeholders to implement Workday Payroll and integrate it with existing processes. Communication and collaboration will primarily occur through virtual meetings, digital collaboration tools, and shared project platforms. The project environment is fast-paced and high-visibility, offering the opportunity to influence key decisions, work on a significant transformation at a billion-dollar organization, and partner with senior stakeholders. There is a streamlined, one-round interview process designed to move quickly and bring the right consultant onto the team.
