Position Title: Retail Sales Associate (Work Study)
Location: Thriftique, 125 51st St, Pittsburgh, PA 15201
Employment Duration: Monday, August 24th, 2026 - Monday, May 3rd, 2027
Reports To: Store Manager, Thriftique
Compensation: $11/hour

Purpose:

NCJW Pittsburgh Section is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms. We actively aim to live our values in the workplace, including family-friendly flexibility. Work-study students at Thriftique will engage in community service by providing customer and client support, helping community members access affordable clothing and home goods, have the opportunity to mentor volunteers and peers in retail and sustainability practices, and supporting NCJW Pittsburgh programs that directly serve and empower women and other residents in the Pittsburgh area. This role directly assists the Store Manager in supporting the retail operations of Thriftique.

Responsibilities:

  • Open and close the store following proper procedures documented in the opening and closing checklist

  • Maintain a safe and organized sales floor

  • Provide superior customer service, including answering questions about current store promotions/sales

  • Hanging, tagging, and stocking merchandise

  • Execute cashier responsibilities using point of sale system

  • Remain current on all company policies and ensures that all policies, standards, and procedures are maintained and followed in a consistent manner

  • Maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, volunteers, student trainees, and donors

  • Stay current and up-to-date on all store systems

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications Requirements:

  • Students must qualify or be pre-approved for the Federal Work Study program

  • Passion for retail, sustainability & resale, or nonprofit organizations

  • Demonstrated experience in retail sales and providing customer service

  • Comfortable working and interacting with a wide array of people

Desired Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to read, write, and interpret instructional documents such as safety rules, operating and instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Effectively communicate with customers, peers, and management.

  • Communicate on the telephone professionally

  • Ability to operate point of sale system

  • Enthusiastic, friendly, and energetic with a genuine desire to provide outstanding service

  • Artistic skills in merchandising, marketing, or fashion

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand for a minimum of 4-6 hours; and lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. safely

  • Stoop, bend, kneel and crouch on a frequent basis

  • Climb a ladder and balance on an occasional basis

Additionally, students may not work more than 20 hours per week (combined between all campus jobs) during the academic year. Students may not exceed 980 work hours per calendar year.

Student jobs do not automatically roll over to the next academic year or summer.
