Position Summary:

We're seeking a positive, motivated GIS Analyst / Modeler with excellent problem-solving abilities and strong communication skills that will demonstrate an ability to work on highly dynamic and interactive projects both independently and as part of a team. This individual should have a strong technical background in GIS, data management, and a general understanding of, and interest in, environmental modeling. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, working with a growing project team and offering GIS support for a variety of projects in inland, coastal, and offshore environments, ocean science, modeling, and data management.

Essential Job Functions:

The following duties are considered essential to the role. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions:

  • Create, digitize, convert, edit, compile, and standardize GIS data from non-spatial sources.

  • Organize and structure spatial data files across servers and database environments, including maintaining data versioning as needed.

  • Perform QA/QC and data cleaning for geospatial, tabular, and model input/output data to ensure accuracy and consistency.

  • Research, gather, prepare, and integrate geospatial environmental data for use in modeling software.

  • Prepare and integrate gridded/raster and vector datasets from multiple sources for use as model inputs.

  • Use, enhance, and develop tools and workflows to analyze, interpret, and present model results.

  • Conduct modeling studies using proprietary model software.

  • Contribute to technical reports as an author or co-author.

  • Develop high-quality figures and maps for reports, presentations, and model documentation.
     

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, engineering, computer science, oceanography, biology, environmental science, or a related scientific field.

  • A minimum of 1 year of relevant professional GIS experience, preferably in consulting, or 2 years of research-based GIS experience.

  • Proficiency with the Esri ArcGIS suite, including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, and extensions such as Spatial Analyst. 

  • Familiarity with common GIS data formats, including geodatabases, shapefiles, and raster datasets.

  • Experience with GIS data creation, management, cleaning, and QA/QC.

  • Familiarity with cloud computing and working with hosted data.

  • Cartographic experience, including the design of maps for reports, web applications, posters, and other presentation materials.

  • Basic GIS programming/scripting experience in Python, including the ability to read, modify, and run existing scripts.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • Basic understanding of AI prompt engineering and agentic AI concepts to support workflow optimization.

  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills, with a high level of attention to detail.

  • Effective technical writing and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with, or a strong understanding of, environmental modeling and the application of quantitative analyses to address environmental challenges involving contaminants in terrestrial, aquatic, and/or atmospheric systems.

  • Strong presentation skills, including experience with public speaking.

  • Proficiency in Python scripting; additional experience with geospatial programming languages such as SQL or Arcade is a plus.

  • Familiarity with statistics and statistical modeling software, such as R or SPSS, is a plus.

  • Research experience in a scientific field, including question development, methods documentation, and presentation of results; undergraduate thesis experience is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit at a workstation and work on a computer for extended periods.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in-person and/or through electronic means.

  • Manual dexterity to use a computer mouse, keyboard, and other tools.

  • Visual acuity to read and interpret technical documents.

Additional Information:

  • For this role, we are open to hybrid work schedules in our South Kingstown, Rhode Island office, or remote work schedules within the eastern or central regional time zones of the United States.

  • This is a full-time position, typically 40 hours per week, with standard hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. Additional hours may be required based on project needs.
