Job description

This is a high school work based learning paid internship position, for students currently enrolled in high school who are 17 years or older and are interested in pursuing a career in the construction industry. Students selected go to school for part of the day, and work for C.W. Matthews the other part of day getting valuable exposure to the heavy highway construction trade.

Students that are selected MUST have:
  • A driver’s license
  • A dependable vehicle to get them to the job site every day.
  • A desire for a career in the construction industry.
  • A strong work ethic and a GREAT attitude.
  • Currently enrolled in a high school WBL (Work Based Learning Program)
  • Participated or currently in a high school construction program.
  • A teacher recommendation (preferably from construction/trades/CTAE teacher)
  • NOT committed to other career pathways prior to this internship
If an intern works more than 40 hours in a week, they will get paid time and a half for every hour worked over 40 hours.
Selected applicants will be placed in one of the company's operating divisions to begin their training in a construction trade.
The duties of this position are continually changing depending on the requirements of each project. The position consist of but is not limited to the following duties.
  • Set up and maintenance of erosion control.
  • Loading and unloading of materials.
  • Shoveling and raking dirt, gravel, and asphalt.
  • General clean up around job site.
  • Checking and maintaining grade stakes.
  • Set up and maintenance of all traffic control aids.
The above listed duties require periods of standing, walking, stooping and bending. Position requires periodic lifting of up to 50 pounds. The job duties described herein are not exhaustive and may be supplemented. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer M/F/V/H
