What are WordPress jobs?

WordPress jobs fall into two major categories. Automattic, the owner of WordPress, has positions where you can work as a developer on the back end and create new content for the platform. However, the majority of jobs focus on being a user and knowing how and when to use the many features that WordPress offers. In these roles, you may be asked to develop and maintain a Wordpress site, code original themes and content, evaluate design aspects, conduct website testing, and design new applications. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of these jobs usually requires several years of experience with WordPress. As part of their qualifications, some employers may ask to see a portfolio of work so they can evaluate your skills.

What is a WordPress developer?

WordPress developers are professionals who specialize in designing, building, and maintaining websites using the WordPress content management system (CMS). They may create custom themes, develop plugins, and optimize sites for performance, security, and user experience. WordPress developers often work with clients to bring their website ideas to life, ensuring the site is functional, responsive, and easy to manage. Their expertise ranges from front-end design to back-end development, depending on the needs of the project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a WordPress developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a WordPress Developer, you need strong expertise in PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and experience with WordPress themes and plugins, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like Git, MySQL, page builders, and knowledge of security best practices, as well as certifications such as WordPress-specific courses, are advantageous. Problem-solving, creativity, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for meeting client needs and collaborating with teams. These skills ensure efficient website development, customization, maintenance, and client satisfaction in a dynamic web environment.

How does a WordPress developer typically collaborate with designers and content creators on website projects?

WordPress Developers frequently work closely with designers to implement visually appealing and user-friendly layouts, often translating design mockups into functional themes. They also coordinate with content creators to ensure that posts, pages, and multimedia are seamlessly integrated and optimized for SEO. Effective communication and use of project management tools are key, as developers must balance technical requirements with the creative vision and content strategy of the team. This collaboration ensures that the final website aligns with both business goals and user needs.

Job description

Digital Web & SEO Specialist
Job no: 50000568
Work type: Full time
Location: Virginia Beach
Categories: Staff & Administration
The Digital Web & SEO Specialist sits at the intersection of front-end web support and technical search engine optimization, bridging the gap between content-focused SEO work and full-scale web development. This role goes beyond content optimization to take hands-on ownership of WordPress administration, technical SEO implementation, and site health while working in close support of the Front-End Web Developer on larger development initiatives. The Digital Web & SEO Specialist is not a content strategist, nor a lead developer, but a technically capable generalist who can independently execute in both disciplines. This position collaborates closely with the Front-End Web Developer and stakeholders across the university to ensure that web properties are fast, accessible, search-visible, and aligned with university enrollment and retention goals.
Work Location: Virginia Beach, VA
Salary: $62,500-67,500 annually
Essential Functions:
Web Development & WordPress Management
  • Maintain and update existing web pages, landing pages, and microsites within established WordPress frameworks using HTML, CSS, and basic PHP and JavaScript.
  • Administer WordPress day-to-day operations to include content updates, plugin management, performance monitoring, and Yoast SEO configuration within templates and structures established by the Front-End Web Developer.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve front-end issues including layout bugs, broken links, plugin conflicts, and page load performance problems; working with the Front-End Web Developer as appropriate.
  • Execute assigned front-end tasks on larger build and redesign projects under the direction of the Front-End Web Developer.
  • Audit web pages for WCAG accessibility compliance and mobile responsiveness, flagging and coordinating remediation with the appropriate team members.
  • Perform QA testing on content updates and minor web changes prior to publishing.

Technical SEO
  • Conduct regular technical SEO audits using tools such as Google Search Console, Screaming Frog, SEMrush, or similar platforms, and implement or coordinate recommended fixes.
  • Implement and maintain structured data (schema markup) across university web properties to improve search visibility and support AI-driven search features such as Google AI Overviews.
  • Monitor and improve Core Web Vitals, page speed, mobile responsiveness, crawlability, and indexation health.
  • Audit, correct, and improve meta tags, canonical tags, XML sitemaps, redirect chains, and other technical SEO elements.
  • Perform keyword research to inform content updates and new page development, ensuring pages are optimized from inception.
  • Coordinate backlink strategy and domain authority initiatives.
  • Track and report on SEO performance metrics using Google Analytics 4 and Search Console, identifying trends and areas for improvement.

Content & Collaboration
  • Update and optimize web content with a focus on user experience, SEO best practices, and university brand standards.
  • Conduct content audits, sitemap planning, and website redesign projects.
  • Collaborate with designers to ensure artwork and visual assets are properly formatted and optimized for web performance.
  • Work with faculty, staff, and university departments to identify content needs and align web updates with enrollment and retention goals.
  • Improve current web processes and workflows as opportunities are identified.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in majors like Computer Science, Information Technology, Digital Marketing, Interactive Media, or a related field. Equivalent professional experience will be considered.
  • 2-3 years of hands-on experience in web development, technical SEO, or a combination of both. Candidates with demonstrated proficiency across disciplines are encouraged to apply even if experience was gained in separate roles.

Prerequisites for the Job
  • Proficiency in WordPress as both a front-end user and back-end administrator, including theme management, plugin configuration, and performance optimization.
  • A working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript and PHP sufficient for WordPress maintenance, template edits, and technical SEO implementation - not full-scale development.
  • Ability to independently execute technical SEO fixes and WordPress updates with the ability to implement recommendations rather than simply identify and report them while knowing when to escalate complex development needs.
  • Hands-on experience with technical SEO tools including Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4, and an SEO auditing platform (SEMrush, Screaming Frog, or similar).
  • Familiarity with schema markup, structured data implementation, and Yoast SEO or equivalent plugin management.
  • Understanding of Core Web Vitals, page speed optimization, and mobile-first development principles.

Candidate must have:
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment, working both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Desire and willingness to stay current on emerging web technologies, SEO trends, and AI search developments within the field of higher education.
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented, with a track record of following through on projects across diverse audiences
  • Collaborative team player who welcomes feedback and direction from senior leadership
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize effectively and think critically under pressure
  • Genuine curiosity about the evolving relationship between web development, SEO, and AI-driven search
  • Commitment to Regent's core values of excellence, innovation, and integrity

Organizational Relationships:
  • Reports to: Director of Web & Advertising Strategy
  • Positions reporting to this position: None
  • Advises, consults and coordinates frequently or regularly with:
    • Front End Web Developer
    • Information Technology
    • Enrollment Management
