Paraprofessional with brailling responsibilities: a person who is responsible for braille production, materials modification, clerical tasks, and working directly with students. This person works under the direction of the special education teacher, school administrator and Tooele County School District Related Services Specialist.
JOB TITLE: Special Education Paraprofessional for student with visual impairment
REPORTS TO: Special Education Teacher, District Related Service Specialist, and School Administrator
Primary Purpose: Enhance the effectiveness of learning opportunities for students with visual impairments
Qualifications:
  • Minimum Education/Certification:
    • High school diploma or GED
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Typing and keyboarding skills
  • Experienced with technology
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with children with disabilities is strongly preferred.
  • Willingness to learn and transcribe Braille

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Work with and under the immediate direction of Special Education teacher and with VI professionals
  • Use braille translation software
  • Use word processing programs on Apple, Macintosh, or PC computers
  • Assist the VI with modifications and supplemental services necessary for the education of students with visual impairments
  • Participate in training on any new VI technology (e.g. software, computers, adaptive assisted devices)
Assist the teacher(s) with:
  • Planning, production, and organization of instructional material
  • Individual and/or group instruction activities
  • Promote and maintain educational team goals.
  • Maintaining and taking educational IEP Goal Data
  • Operate in accordance with district and school regulations
  • Braille, record, or enlarge textbooks, workbooks, worksheets, and diagnostic tests that are not available through state agencies
  • Assist the VI and teachers in promoting student independence
  • Assist the VI and teacher with modifications and supplemental services necessary for the education of students with visual impairments

  • Computer keyboard

  • Braille printer (Embosser)
  • Tactual and braille production equipment (Braille writer)
  • Assistive technology (such as electronic braillenote, abacus,).
