What is a woodworking internship?

A woodworking internship is a temporary position where individuals, often students or recent graduates, work under the guidance of experienced woodworkers to learn practical skills in woodworking. Interns typically help with tasks such as measuring, cutting, assembling, and finishing wood projects. The internship provides hands-on experience, exposure to different woodworking techniques, and insight into the industry. It also helps interns build a portfolio and network with professionals, which can be valuable for future job opportunities. Most woodworking internships are offered by furniture makers, carpentry shops, or artisanal studios.

What types of projects can interns expect to work on during a woodworking internship?

During a woodworking internship, interns typically participate in a variety of hands-on projects, ranging from basic joinery and furniture repair to assisting with custom builds and installations. You'll likely work closely with experienced woodworkers, learning to use tools safely, interpret design plans, and understand wood selection and finishing techniques. Projects may also include tasks such as sanding, staining, assembling components, and helping with quality control. The experience is designed to build practical skills and expose you to the workflow of a professional woodworking environment.

Experience with hand tools, power tools, measuring devices, and potentially CAD software is commonly required. About Surya Sound Temple

Surya Sound Temple is a private music sanctuary in Bushwick, Brooklyn, dedicated to instrumentalists, producers, and artists exploring sound through creativity, craftsmanship, and cultural traditions.

Our studio is home to a growing ecosystem of original projects, including:

  • Electrobones – handcrafted wooden MIDI percussion instruments and acoustic pickups

  • Art of Tabla – percussion education rooted in the tabla tradition
  • Speedbag Drummer – rhythm-based coordination and movement training

In addition to our educational programs, we design and manufacture products, produce creative media, and offer recording and content production services.

About the Internship

This internship is designed for individuals who want real-world experience inside an independent creative studio.

Rather than making coffee or filing paperwork, you’ll contribute to active projects while learning how a multidisciplinary music studio operates.

This position is experience-based and is ideal for students, recent graduates, creatives, and musicians looking to build their portfolio, receive mentorship, or earn a professional reference.

Responsibilities

  • Video editing and social media content
  • Music production and recording sessions
  • Instrument setup and tuning
  • Product development and creative research
  • Marketing and community outreach
  • Administrative and project support
  • Event preparation and documentation

Every internship is slightly different based on current studio projects and your individual skills.

We value curiosity, initiative, and a genuine passion for music.

Ideal candidates are:

  • Musicians or artists
  • Interested in recording, media, design, or creative technology

Bonus skills include:

  • Pro Tools
  • Adobe Creative Suite
  • Photography or videography
  • Graphic design
  • Woodworking or instrument repair
  • Social media content creation

Selection Process

We receive a large number of internship applications throughout the year and accept only a small group of interns.

We’re not looking for perfect résumés—we’re looking for people who have taken the time to understand our work and can explain why they want to be part of it.

Before applying, we encourage you to explore our projects and learn about what we create.

    • A brief introduction about yourself
    • Your résumé (optional but encouraged)
    • Links to your portfolio, social media, or creative work (if available)
