What is women engineering?

A Women Engineering job typically refers to roles and initiatives that support, promote, and empower women in engineering fields. These positions may involve technical engineering work, leadership roles, mentorship programs, advocacy efforts, or diversity initiatives within organizations. The goal is to encourage greater female participation in engineering, address gender disparities, and create inclusive work environments. Women in engineering contribute across various industries, including technology, aerospace, manufacturing, and infrastructure. Many companies and organizations actively support women engineers through scholarships, networking events, and professional development programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a women engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Women Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, mathematics, and problem-solving, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional certification. Familiarity with industry-standard software (such as CAD tools, MATLAB, or project management platforms) and compliance with applicable safety and quality standards is essential. Strong communication, teamwork, and resilience are crucial soft skills for excelling in diverse and often male-dominated environments. These abilities enable effective project delivery, innovative solutions, and the advancement of gender diversity and inclusion in engineering fields.

What initiatives or support networks are commonly available to women engineers within organizations?

Many organizations offer dedicated programs to support women engineers, such as mentorship schemes, women-in-tech affinity groups, and professional development workshops. These initiatives help foster an inclusive environment, provide networking opportunities, and address challenges unique to women in engineering. Participating in these groups can assist with career advancement and help you connect with peers facing similar experiences. It's common for companies to also partner with external organizations to provide additional resources.

Job description

Senior Engineering Manager - Lab Execution Platform : Women's Health
About the Role
This is your chance to own a platform that lab scientists rely on every single day-and to rebuild it from the ground up. You'll lead maintenance of our off-the-shelf Lab Execution System while driving its transition to a custom, in-house platform. Every improvement you ship makes lab operations faster, makes scientists' lives easier, and ultimately helps improve patient health outcomes. The work is real, the impact is immediate, and the customers are just down the hall.
You'll treat Lab Operations and R&D as your primary customers, partnering with them to build an intuitive, efficient, scalable Lab Execution platform they'll love using. You'll lead a small, sharp team in a fast-moving Kanban or Scrum workflow, lean hard into a "do more with less" mindset, and put AI to work multiplying what your engineers can accomplish. You'll stay close to the code while leading with impact and kindness, because the best teams are healthy teams.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Development
  • Own the design, build, and maintenance of both the off-the-shelf and custom Lab Execution platforms, keeping high-throughput lab processes running without a hitch.
  • Build an AI-forward team that reaches for modern tooling to move faster and ship smarter.
  • Stay hands-on-dive into the code and test the system yourself to make it better.
  • Build and scale cloud-based microservices and front-end applications that power real lab workflows.
  • Set the bar for technical excellence: reliability, performance, and a user experience people actually enjoy.
  • Own the CI/CD pipeline and lock in quality with automated testing.
  • Architect infrastructure that scales effortlessly and stays cost-smart.
Customer-Focused Collaboration
  • Be the bridge between engineering and lab users, turning real-time feedback into rapid improvements.
  • Build tight relationships with Lab Operations, R&D, and stakeholders so their needs steer the roadmap.
  • Run a nimble Kanban (or Scrum) workflow that flexes with the lab's evolving needs.
Team Leadership & Management
  • Coach and grow a small, agile team, fueling their technical and professional development.
  • Juggle priorities, deadlines, and resources-without dropping the bar on quality.
  • Spark an ownership mindset so every engineer feels the impact of what they ship.
Process Optimization & Agile Execution
  • Relentlessly streamline how the team works-maximum output, minimum overhead.
  • Champion modular, cloud-native design as the default way you build.
  • Watch performance closely, squash issues before they spread, and keep the platform rock-solid.
Qualifications
Required Skills & Experience
  • 10+ years building software applications.
  • A track record of leading and growing high-performing engineering teams.
  • Expertise in Python, TypeScript, and React, with strong front-end development chops.
  • Proficiency with AWS services (Lambda, RDS, DynamoDB, S3, Glue) and infrastructure as code.
  • Strong relational database skills (MySQL/PostgreSQL) and SQL programming.
  • Experience with messaging frameworks such as Kafka.
  • Sharp problem-solving instincts and a quality-first mindset.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills-you can speak engineer and non-engineer fluently.
Nice to Have
  • Experience building custom LIMS/LES systems.
  • Hands-on experience with LabVantage.
  • Based in Austin, TX, to work shoulder-to-shoulder with lab operations and gather live feedback.

The pay range is listed and actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, years & depth of experience, certifications and specific office location. This may differ in other locations due to cost of labor considerations.
