Recruitment Announcement - Internship

BGPW Environmental Compliance & Stormwater Utility Division

The Bowling Green Stormwater Utility and Environmental Compliance Division of Bowling Green Public Works is seeking a motivated WKU student for a paid internship. This division is tasked with managing the City of Bowling Green's stormwater infrastructure, environmental compliance with state and federal law, mitigating geohazards such as sinkholes and flooding, and regulating construction and development in Bowling Green. 

Expected intern tasks will include mapping and inspecting stormwater infrastructure, assisting environmental sampling efforts (water sampling, hydrological monitoring, geophysical surveys), public engagement events, construction site inspections, and other duties as assigned. Ability to work in inclement weather (heat, rain, cold, etc.), lift and carry 40lbs., and pass a standard pre-employment drug screening is required.

Internships are limited to one year from the start date, with flexible scheduling during school terms based on class load. An intern may work up to 40 hours a week, but more likely 10 20 hours during school terms and 20 40 hours during breaks. The current intern pay rate is $13.90 per hour.

Undergraduate students majoring in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Sustainability & Geographic Studies, Geological Sciences, or Environmental & Occupational Health Science are welcome to apply, as are graduate students in programs such as Geoscience or Environmental & Occupational Health Science. Coursework or practical experience in two or more of these areas is strongly preferred: 

  • Spatial Data (Geographic Information Systems, Surveying, Remote Sensing, etc.)

  • Water Resources (Hydrology/Hydraulics, Floodplain Management, Treatment, etc.)

  • Environmental Studies (Env. Science, Env. Management, Sustainability, etc.)

  • Geology / Geotechnics (Geomorphology, Hydrogeology, Soil Mechanics, etc.)

  • Construction Practices (Materials, Codes and Standards, Project Management, etc.)
