A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a specialized registered nurse who provide trauma informed care to victims of assault. They conduct comprehensive medical-forensic examinations, collect physical evidence, document injuries, and provide critical medical treatments like STI prophylaxis and pregnancy prevention.
Key Responsibilities
  • Forensic Examinations: Conduct detailed, head-to-toe medical-forensic exams, including ano-genital assessments, while strictly preserving evidence and the legal chain of custody.
  • Evidence amp; Documentation: Carefully collect and package forensic evidence (DNA swabs, clothing, biological samples), document injuries, and take forensic photography.
  • Patient Care: Assess for acute injuries, administer prophylactic medications (such as STI treatments and emergency contraception), and provide crisis intervention.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Partner with law enforcement, victim advocates, social workers, and local prosecution teams.
  • Legal Testimony: Serve as a fact or expert witness in subsequent legal and court proceedings regarding findings and evidence collected during the exam.

Requirements amp; Qualifications
  • Active Licensure: Valid, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license.
