Job description

Job Title: Design Engineer III

Work Location: Saline, Michigan

This is a Hybrid position, which combines both in office and off-site work. Associates are required to work at least four days in the office each week, but also have the flexibility to work off-site.

BASIC PURPOSE:

This engineer will support guest engineer / design-in work with Toyota. This engineer will support next generation electrical platform development of Wire Harness parts across several customer vehicle projects. It is preferable for an experienced engineer with an understanding of automotive design development, scheduling and vehicle packaging. The new engineer will have a temporary training period at SEWS Farmington Hills location prior to becoming part of a development team in Toyota Technical Center as design-in. The member will have harness routing design responsibility.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Creates, updates and manages 3D and 2D design files on Toyota's data management system throughout the developmental phases of assigned projects.
  2. Works closely with other internal departments at Sumitomo and Toyota, in order to maintain the communication levels necessary for project success.
  3. Serves as the lead routing engineer of Sumitomo for assigned projects, including the development of the project schedule and monitoring the status of reporting engineers and their open issues.
  4. Visits SEWS' manufacturing plants at planned stages of the project to review harness quality and workability and to explain harness critical points to manufacturing members.
  5. Visits Toyota's manufacturing plants through the customer's RE (Resident Engineer) program to investigate quality and workability problems in the vehicle and apply effective countermeasures.
  6. Understands design quality controls and applies them throughout the harness development process in order to achieve excellent design quality.
  7. Understands project development schedules and follows it in order to reach each milestone in a timely manner.
  8. Responsible for understanding Toyota Standards and design procedures and following them closely throughout the course of assigned projects.
  9. Responsible for understanding SEWS wire harness design standard and applying them to initial harness development and harness evaluations.
  10. Understands harness routing design deeply and is familiar with circuitry and component design to support R&D for next generation Toyota vehicles.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience preferably in wire harness design or electrical system design and/or at minimum general automotive design.
  • Applicant to be able to oversee up to 5 engineers by checking their work, giving technical advice and providing mentorship.
  • Knowledge of CAD design is strongly desired, specifically use of CATIA software is preferred but not required.
  • Primary location for work will be on-site at Toyota Technical Center in York Township.
  • Japanese bilingual capability is desired but not required.
  • Applicant must be willing to travel.
