What is a wine manager?

A wine manager usually works in the hospitality industry. In this career, your duties include acquiring wine and spirits to serve in a wine bar, winery, restaurant, hotel, or another venue. You are responsible for managing the wine stock and overseeing wine service to the customer. Wine marketing managers, on the other hand, work on the sales side of the industry. In this position, your responsibilities include introducing your employer’s product to a potential buyer and, sometimes, consulting on items such as label and bottle design.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a wine manager?

To thrive as a Wine Manager, you need in-depth knowledge of wines, inventory management, and purchasing, often supported by certifications like WSET or Court of Master Sommeliers. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory tracking software, and supplier ordering platforms is typically required. Excellent customer service, communication, and leadership skills help you build rapport with clients and lead staff effectively. These skills ensure optimal wine selection, efficient operations, and an exceptional guest experience, directly impacting business success.

How does a wine manager typically collaborate with chefs and event staff to curate wine selections?

A Wine Manager works closely with chefs to design wine lists that complement the restaurant's cuisine and enhance the overall dining experience. They often participate in menu tastings to ensure the wine pairings are harmonious and may train the waitstaff on how to present and serve selected wines. For special events or private functions, the Wine Manager collaborates with event coordinators to create customized wine offerings, taking into account guest preferences and event themes. This teamwork ensures a cohesive and memorable experience for guests while supporting the restaurant's brand and profitability.
