Job description

Art Layout Specialist – Graphic Design & Inspection

Metalcraft | Mason City, Iowa
Full-Time | 7:15 AM – 3:45 PM | Employee-Owned Company

Put your technical skills and attention to detail to work at an industry leader!

Metalcraft, a 75-year strong, employee-owned manufacturer, is looking for a technically driven Art Layout Specialist to join our production art team.

This is not a traditional graphic design position. The focus is on technical artwork preparation, file accuracy, inspection, troubleshooting, and preparing customer artwork for manufacturing. If you enjoy working with Adobe products such as Adobe Illustrator at a high level, solving technical problems, and making sure every detail is correct, this could be an excellent fit.

What You’ll Do
  • Prepare, inspect, and process customer artwork and proofs according to established production requirements
  • Use Adobe Illustrator extensively to modify, clean up, and prepare artwork for manufacturing
  • Build accurate, production-ready files and identify potential artwork or production issues before they become problems
  • Clean up and prepare logos and other graphics for digitizing and production
  • Review layouts, colors, dimensions, positioning, and other technical specifications for accuracy
  • Troubleshoot artwork and file-related issues
  • Maintain organized electronic archives and file systems
  • Work with Adobe Photoshop, Checkmate, Microsoft Excel, Automation Engine, Indigo front-end tools, Scan Master Designer, and other production technologies
  • Assist in other trained or cross-trained areas as needed
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance as required
Are You a Fit?

You’ll be successful in this role if you:

  • Have strong technical aptitude and enjoy learning software, systems, and production processes
  • Are highly proficient with computers and comfortable working in technical software environments
  • Have strong Adobe Illustrator skills or the ability and motivation to develop advanced proficiency
  • Notice small details and take pride in accuracy
  • Enjoy troubleshooting and figuring out why something is not working correctly
  • Can follow established processes while using good judgment when something does not look right
  • Are organized and comfortable managing multiple files, specifications, and priorities
  • Work well independently while also collaborating with others
  • Are curious, adaptable, and willing to learn new technologies and processes
What You’ll Need
  • High school diploma with proficiency in English and Math
  • Strong computer and technical skills
  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator or similar graphics software strongly preferred
  • Understanding of layout, color, graphics, or print production is helpful
  • Post-secondary graphic arts training is preferred but not required

We are less concerned about artistic creativity than we are about technical ability, accuracy, problem-solving, and the ability to become highly proficient with our software and production processes.
