Job description

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Hawaii Preparatory Academy is looking for an experienced mechanic and welder. This position must be able to utilize excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to maintain and repair vehicles. This position is responsible for troubleshooting issues and fixing them aiming to maximum reliability and functionality. General welding experience is required to repair and maintain equipment. The ability to multitask as you work in a fast-paced environment to keep our school operational is required. Your organizational and prioritization skills will also be required as you work efficiently to handle routine maintenance tasks and supplies, tend to urgent needs and keep an inventory of materials for all tasks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Diagnoses mechanical difficulties on automotive, mower, and tractor engines, transmissions, brakes, starters, batteries, etc. Repairs and maintains mechanical equipment including fuel pumps, windshield wipers, clutches, fan belts, drive belts, wheel bearings, etc.; may service, wash and polish vehicles.
  • General welding of steel and iron objects in the fabrication or repair of new, broken, or worn parts; melts and fuses metal parts; adds metal at joints or fractures by using a gas torch and melting metal; selects torch tips; selects welding rod based on a knowledge of the behavior of metals under a welding flame; performs spot welding and/or continuous welding; welds flat, vertical and overhead works; works from blueprints; lays out materials; may cut metal with a cutting torch.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Surveys jobs assigned, estimates materials and time requirements.
  • Fills out and submits Materials Request Forms if materials are needed to be ordered.
  • Does major tune-ups, transmission repair or replacement, complete brake jobs, engine repair or replacement, exhaust system repair or replacement.
  • Advises the Facilities Superintendent concerning repair, purchase, and disposition of vehicles and ground equipment.
  • Works with Maintenance Clerk and CDL Coordinator to train bus drivers and maintain school buses in accordance with CDL Program guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma. Post-secondary education or training in a trade with an Associate's Degree or two-year college or technical school preferred (or work equivalent).
  • Trained as an auto mechanic and welder. Prior experience in maintenance, repair and extensive knowledge of cars, trucks, tractors, mowers, weedeaters, small motors, and other maintenance equipment.
  • Must have Commercial Driver's License covering buses over 10,000GVW as well as a Passenger Endorsement.
  • Works in a professional and ethical manner with high integrity. Accepts responsibility and accounts for his/her actions.
  • Detail oriented and pays attention to all the minute details of the project or task.
  • Follow all health and safety laws and regulations.
  • Maintains a current valid driver's license.
  • Comes to work on time as scheduled with a positive/team player attitude.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and handle interruptions and changes as they occur in a productive and positive manner to complete the task completely and accurately as requested.
  • A trusted, dependable self-starter who works independently and efficiently with limited supervision

Physical Demands:

  • Be able to stand, bend, crouch, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
  • Be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Be able to work with hands and arms in a variety of positions, including overhead.
  • Be able to operate tools, equipment, and machinery safely and effectively.
  • Be able to move around campus, including climbing stairs and walking across uneven surfaces.
  • Be able to work in varying environmental conditions such as heat, cold, noise, and exposure to dust or fumes.

Employment Term: 12 Months

Work Schedule: Generally Monday-Friday, between 7:30 AM and 4:00 PM

Starting Salary $24-$26 depending on experience.
