Structural Welders (Shipyard) – Hawaii
Company: Lead Marine
Location: Hawaii
Job Type: Full-Time / Contract (4-Month Assignment)
Pay Rate: $35.00 / hour
Per Diem: $170.00 / day (Paid 7 days a week)
Work Schedule: 60 hours per week

Job Summary
Lead Marine has immediate openings for experienced Journeyman Structural Welders for a 4-month marine repair project in Hawaii.
We are looking for hands-on, dependable tradespeople who can commit to a 60-hour work week for the full 4-month project duration. This job involves heavy-plate structural welding on steel ships following American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) quality standards.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Perform multi-pass Stick (SMAW) welding on heavy carbon steel plate in all positions (including vertical-up).
  • Use 7018 low-hydrogen rods to make clean, structural groove and fillet welds.
  • Use heating torches for pre-heating steel prior to welding.
  • Run carbon arc gouging equipment for back-gouging and joint prep.
  • Prep, grind, and clean weld joints to pass visual inspections by ABS inspectors.
  • Read weld gauges to verify proper joint fit-up and fillet sizes.
  • Work safely onboard vessels, on staging/scaffolding, and in tight structural compartments.
Job Requirements
  • Experience: 5+ years of structural welding experience in a shipyard, ship repair, or Navy base setting.
  • Availability: Must be able to work 60 hours per week and complete the entire 4-month assignment without disruption.
  • Vision Check: Must be able to pass a standard J-1 vision exam.
  • Gear: Must bring your own welding hood, leathers, and standard trade hand tools.
  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to read structural shop drawings and standard weld symbols.
  • Security: Must be eligible for standard shipyard security badging and base access.
Onsite Weld Test Details
All welders will take a hands-on ABS qualification test when arriving on site:
  • Process: Stick / SMAW (using 7018 rods).
  • Test Plate: 1-inch thick steel plate with backing strip (passing this test qualifies you for unlimited thickness).
  • Positions: All-position groove test (vertical-up).
  • Gouging: Basic air carbon arc gouging demonstration.
Pay & Benefits
  • Hourly Pay: $35.00 / hour
  • Per Diem: $170.00 / day (Paid 7 days a week for eligible traveling welders)
  • Weekly Hours: 60 hours / week (20 hours of OT weekly)
