Description

"BIG PICTURE" RESPONSIBILITY
College of the Canyons is seeking a faculty leader in the area of Welding Technology. This is a 10- MONTH professional, full-time tenure track position beginning August 14, 2026. The position may include a combination of teaching, department, college, and community leadership functions. Assignment may include day, evening, and weekend duties at all District sites.
Example of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Teaches a full schedule of welding and metal fabrication courses at various locations, including Valencia, Canyon Country, dual enrollment high schools, and satellite campuses.
• Provides instruction to students, assesses their progress toward course objectives, and maintains accurate records of their achievement.
• Oversees, promotes, and organizes outreach efforts for the Welding program while also ensuring student persistence and retention.
• Promotes student awareness of safety standards, delivers instruction aligned with industry recognized skills and competencies, and supports successful program completion.
• Oversees the implementation and compliance with the AWS SENSE (American Welding Society Schools Excelling through National School Standards Education) entry-level curriculum across all applicable welding courses.
• Promotes and maintains National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3) curricula in all applicable welding courses.
• Secures essential industry credentials to enhance both current and emerging programs within the Welding Technology department.
• Ensures compliance with accreditation standards of regional and national accrediting agencies.
• Maintains compliance with established safety protocols and proper work procedures at all times.
• Demonstrated expertise in metal fabrication, with proficiency in operating a range of equipment including manual mills and lathes, pneumatic and hydraulic shears, tube benders, and CNC plasma cutters.
• Operates precision and conventional measuring tools and equipment with accuracy. Interprets basic-to-complex prints and drawings
• Develops and revises appropriate credit and noncredit program and course curriculum in response to discipline and workforce needs.
• Maintains office hours and participates in department, division, and college committees and governance.
• Participates in and implements departmental and college program reviews.
• Provides feedback to the Welding department Business & Leadership Team (BLT).
• Participates in additional faculty responsibilities, including college decision-making activities related to professional and academic matters. The activities will occur within the department as well as in the larger College setting and at all district campuses.
• Engages in ongoing professional development and preparation related to best practices associated with pedagogy, andragogy, and all instructional (including virtual) teaching modalities to address anticipated student and instructional delivery needs.
• Participates in all course, program and institutional Student Learning Outcome (SLO) assessment processes.
• Participates in outreach efforts to attract new students into the program.
• Assists with scheduling, evaluation, and mentoring of adjunct faculty.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Minimum Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Possession of a California Community College Instructor Credential in Welding Technology.
OR
• Bachelor's degree or higher plus two years of full-time equivalent professional experience in engineering, manufacturing/ industrial technology, or closely related field, or the equivalent.
OR
• Associate degree plus six years of full-time equivalent of professional experience in engineering, manufacturing/ industrial technology or closely related field, or the equivalent.
Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, ethnic and disability backgrounds of community college students.

REQUIRED LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
Candidates must possess at least one of the following licenses or certifications listed in Option 1 or 2.
OPTION #1
• Proof of current LADBS certification.
• Must be maintained throughout the course of employment.
• Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) Structural Steel Welder Certification - Manual process (SMAW).

OPTION #2
• Proof of current ASME Section IX (6G) certification.
• Must be maintained throughout the course of employment.
• Must be certified to either or 2" and/or 6-inch carbon steel pipe: GTAW root, SMAW fill/cover.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
• Demonstrated experience teaching Career Education courses at both the high school and post-secondary levels.
• Demonstrated experience teaching Career Education courses to incarcerated students.
• Demonstrated proficiency in instructing conventional (manual) machine tool theory and operation, including manual milling machines and lathes.
• Proficient in operating standard metal fabrication equipment, including tube benders, press brakes, saws, CNC plasma cutting tables, box pan brakes, as well as sheet and plate rollers.
• Expertise in equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge to obtain industry-recognized welding certifications and credentials.
• Demonstrated proficiency in delivering instruction through online and blended learning formats.
• Demonstrated experience serving on external industry advisory boards or committees.
• Demonstrated dedication to staying updated within the welding field.
• Demonstrated proficiency in welding carbon steel pipe in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions.
• Proficiency in performing pipe layout and fabrication functions.
• Ability to weld in all positions using SMAW, GMAW, FCAW and GTAW processes.
• Possession of a current American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) license.
• Possession of a current American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector (CWE) license.
• Commitment to maintain currency in the discipline, including use of advanced technology required in the discipline.
• Experience with online teaching pedagogy and andragogy is desired.
• Strong commitment to professional growth and development, and to the continued innovation and improvement of successful teaching.
• Ability to work effectively with computers and other forms of advanced technology utilized in providing high quality instruction and the understanding and successful use of learning technology.
• Willingness to facilitate and encourage student success by working to develop varied and innovative academic learning environments.
• Ability to communicate professionally and clearly with students and staff, both orally and in writing.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with on-campus groups (including students, faculty, administrators and staff), as well as, off- campus community and education partners.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Position will require extended periods presenting material in a classroom setting, and frequent periods of movement from one area to another within a workshop environment, along with frequent movement between various instructional and work areas, which may include traveling to different floors or workshop spaces of a building. Requires use of welding equipment, tools, and computers for instructional purposes; frequent exertion of 30-40 pounds of force to move materials or equipment; communicating and providing information to students and colleagues; and possible travel between training sites. Employees will need to be comfortable working in workshop settings and able to meet the physical requirements of welding, including manual dexterity for handling tools and materials, and safely operating and maintaining welding machinery with assistance as needed. In the event of an emergency, employees will be relied upon to serve as emergency workers.
