What are Weekend Web Developers?

Weekend Web Developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain websites or web applications primarily during weekends. They may work part-time, freelance, or as an additional support resource for companies that need web development services outside regular business hours. This role is ideal for individuals with other commitments during weekdays or for organizations needing continuous project progress. Weekend Web Developers typically possess skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and various web frameworks, ensuring websites are functional, responsive, and visually appealing. Their work can involve both front-end and back-end development tasks depending on the project's needs.

What are some common challenges faced by Weekend Web Developers, and how can they effectively manage their workload?

Weekend Web Developers often juggle multiple projects within limited timeframes, which can make it challenging to prioritize tasks and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Additionally, they may need to coordinate with full-time team members who work during the week, requiring clear communication and effective use of collaboration tools. To manage these challenges, it's helpful to set clear expectations with clients or teams, utilize project management software, and establish a consistent workflow to maximize productivity during weekend hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Web Developer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Weekend Web Developer, you need proficiency in front-end and back-end coding languages (such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks like React or Node.js), along with a relevant degree or portfolio of completed projects. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, content management systems (CMS), and basic database management is common. Strong problem-solving abilities, time management, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for balancing project demands and client expectations in limited timeframes. These competencies ensure efficient and high-quality project delivery, even within the constraints of weekend schedules.

Job description

We're seeking a highly skilled and experienced mid-level Web Designer to join our client's team. In this role, you will own the digital experience across a full portfolio of brands โ€”ranging from industrial platform sites that demand technical credibility to hospitality and consumer-facing venture brands that require warmth and accessibility. The ideal candidate is an adaptable, detail-oriented professional capable of translating diverse brand guidelines into cohesive, polished digital experiences without defaulting to a generic middle.

This is a Full-Time position which requires the talent to work onsite at our client's office in Stratford, Ontario on a hybrid basis (3 days per week in-office).

Description

As a Web Designer, you will lead the end-to-end web design process, from initial UX and layout planning to final visual execution. You will design across multiple ventures and audiences, adapting your tone and style to fit the unique requirements of capital markets and consumer audiences alike. Reporting to the creative team, you will collaborate closely across various departments and business units. You will act as a key driving force for the digital presentation of the portfolio, collaborating with external development partners, building directly on no-code platforms when scope allows, and maintaining brand consistency across all digital touchpoints.

Responsibilities

  • End-to-End Design: Lead the complete web design lifecycle, creating responsive, on-brand website layouts using tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or similar suites.
  • Brand Translation: Convert established brand guidelines and creative direction into high-fidelity web designs ready for development and public launch.
  • Site Optimization: Refresh or completely redesign existing web properties to enhance user experience, structural integrity, and overall usability.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with internal teams and external web development partners to ensure design concepts are executed with technical accuracy.
  • Platform & Migration Support: Coordinate and support site migrations, hosting transitions, and ongoing site updates as needed across various project timelines.
  • Design System Upkeep: Maintain, update, and scale digital asset libraries and design systems to guarantee consistency across all web properties.
  • Web Standards Compliance: Apply SEO principles and web accessibility (AODA/WCAG) best practices throughout the entire design process.
  • Industry Alignment: Stay well-informed on evolving web standards, digital design trends, and modern prototyping tools.

Requirements

Must-Have Skills and Qualifications:

  • Professional Experience: 4โ€“6+ years of professional web design experience, supported by a strong portfolio that demonstrates complete ownership from brand guidelines to fully realized responsive site designs.
  • Tool Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in modern design and prototyping software (e.g., Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud, or equivalent).
  • UX/UI Competency: A solid, foundational understanding of user experience, user interface design, and web usability principles.
  • Platform Familiarity: Comfort collaborating with external partners using Webflow or similar no-code development platforms (focused on design collaboration rather than heavy development).
  • Project Management: Highly organized with a meticulous attention to detail and the proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects smoothly.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills to work effectively across diverse corporate departments.

Nice-to-Have Skills and Qualifications:

  • CMS & Content Strategy: Experience planning content structures or working directly within Content Management Systems.
  • Technical Handoff: A working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to facilitate seamless design-to-development technical handoffs.
  • Interactive Design: Experience crafting interactive digital prototypes or micro-animations to enhance user engagement.

Ready to make an impact?
