Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (Stepdown) position requiring NE or Compact RN licensure and drip titration skills for 12-hour night shifts.

Details
  • Acute care Stepdown/PCU unit with 33 beds
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4-5, transitioning to 1:6 with virtual nursing support in June
  • Patient population ranges from young adults through geriatrics with diagnoses including sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, COVID, stroke, renal failure, COPD, DKA, and complex multisystem issues
  • RNs required to titrate drips including Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, IV antibiotics, and Insulin
  • Charge Nurse present on each shift and takes a patient assignment
  • CNAs available at approximately 1:10 ratio, fluctuating with unit census
  • RT equipment used includes BiPAP and Airvo
  • Tele/Monitor Techs present on unit; RNs must read and interpret their own telemetry strips
  • 12-hour night shifts (0630-1900 or 1830-0700), with unit schedulers creating traveler schedules
  • Every other weekend required
  • Holiday coverage as needed to meet unit needs
  • Floating required to MedSurg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care
  • EPIC EMR used
  • Upon transition to virtual nursing, each nurse will have a dedicated CNA and the Charge RN will not carry a patient assignment
Requirements
  • Active RN license (State or Compact/NLC) required, no pending licenses accepted
  • Minimum 2 years of experience required
  • BSN not required
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS (active, no pending certifications accepted)
  • Prior Stepdown/PCU or telemetry experience required
  • Must be able to titrate and manage critical care drips
  • Driver's license required for consideration and used to verify residence
Additional Information
  • Responsible for providing direct patient care in a fast-paced Stepdown unit with frequent admissions and discharges within the same shift
  • Strong teamwork, positive attitude, and commitment to bedside report and hourly rounding are key to success on this unit
  • Upon transition to virtual nursing, virtual nurses will assist with admissions, discharges, education, rounding, and care plans
  • First week of orientation is classroom-based, followed by two 12-hour shifts on the floor
  • Scrub color for RNs is navy blue
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care departments; refusal to remove them will result in contract termination
  • RNs must pass a Pass/Fail open-book exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90%, using provided resources
  • Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
  • Candidates may not have been directly employed (full time, part time, or PRN) with any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity, within the past year; PRN employment through outside staffing firms will be considered
  • Up to 7 days of RTO may be requested upfront per 13-week contract; additional RTO requests will not be approved after submission
  • Facility may cancel up to 4 shifts per 13-week assignment (3 shifts for shorter assignments)
