Job description

The Scenic Carpenter will assist the Technical Direction team in constructing, installing, and dismantling scenery for all Mainstage productions. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a proficiency in the safe operation of power tools, scenic theatrical carpentry, and theatrical rigging.
As part of the Performance Services department, the Scenic Carpenter reports to the Technical Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Performs preventive maintenance on equipment

Mentor student workers as applicable to the tasks at hand

Maintain cleanliness and organization of the scene shop and associated workspaces

Participate in all load-ins, changeovers, and strikes throughout the contract period

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

BA in Theater or equivalent work experience

Minimum 4 years experience in theatrical carpentry

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Knowledge and experience with hardware and build techniques

Proficiency in wood construction and theatrical rigging

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Read and interpret CAD drawings and cut lists

Troubleshooting and problem solving skills

Punctuality, dependability, and ability to work independently

Strong leadership and teamwork skills

Valid driver's license and clean driving record

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee overhire and student crew in relationship with the Assistant Technical Director

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Indoor environments, some with low light: workshop, control booth, stages, backstage areas, office spaces

Seated and standing positions

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, ETC:

Occasional nights and weekends required

Must be able to lift 50 pounds

Must be comfortable with heights in excess of 24 feet

Must be able to work in tight, dark spaces

The rate for this position is $26/hour.
