Job description

Orizon, a Spitzer company under the Race Rock platform, is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead engineering and detailing in support of structural steel fabrication operations.


This role is responsible for delivering accurate, fabrication-ready engineering output, including connection design, while ensuring alignment between engineering, estimating, shop operations, and customer requirements.


This is a production-driven leadership role. Success is measured by the ability to produce clear, buildable engineering deliverables, maintain schedule, and eliminate rework in the shop.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage outsourced engineering and detailing teams
  • Deliver accurate, buildable drawings, connection designs, and Tekla models
  • Ensure all designs are code-compliant, practical, in alignment with contract documents, and fabrication-ready
  • Align engineering output with procurement deliverables, tracking system upload data, CNC files, shop capabilities, sequencing, and production schedules
  • Coordinate with estimating to support bidding and project setup
  • Interface with customers, EPC contractors, and customer engineering teams
  • Identify and resolve issues before they impact fabrication or schedule
  • Support continuous improvement in engineering quality, speed, and consistency

Tekla / BIM (Required)

  • Hands-on proficiency in Tekla Structures
  • Experience importing BIM models (IFC, Revit, etc.) into Tekla/SDS2
  • Ability to clean, validate, and manage model data for fabrication use
  • Experience producing outputs that support shop drawings and CNC/automated equipment

Required Experience (Non-Negotiable)

  • Structural steel fabrication or heavy industrial environment
  • Strong experience in structural steel connection design (AISC-based)
  • Strong working knowledge of AWS D1.1 welding requirements and ASTM material specifications, with the ability to apply them directly to fabrication and connection design
  • Experience working with or supporting EPC contractors (e.g., Fluor, Bechtel, etc.)
  • Proven leadership experience managing engineering or detailing teams
  • Hands-on experience with Tekla Structures and BIM model management
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Fabrication workflows
    • Shop constraints and sequencing
    • Engineering deliverables tied to production and schedule


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Structural or Civil preferred)
  • PE license (preferred)
  • Experience with AISC certification environments
  • Familiarity with automated fabrication systems (e.g., Voortman)
  • Experience supporting estimating or project cost alignment


Operational Expectations

  • Engineering deliverables are right the first time and ready for fabrication
  • Connection designs are efficient, buildable, and support production
  • Engineering and shop operations remain fully aligned
  • RFIs, rework, and production delays are minimized
  • Engineering supports both standard shapes and tubular work as required

Work Schedule

The Project Engineer will work Monday-Friday 7:30 AM-4:30 PM. Spitzer currently runs two shifts, Monday through Friday with overtime on weekend work as needed. Late afternoon/evening/weekend hours may be required as needed. Work schedules may change to accommodate production needs.
