Job description

Position Summary

The Shipping & Receiving Manager is a vital leader within the production operation at Eastern Metal Works (EMW). This position is responsible for overseeing all shipping, receiving, yard organization, inventory control, and material handling activities to ensure efficient workflow, accurate deliveries, and safe operations. The Shipping & Receiving Manager will supervise and train personnel, coordinate logistics and scheduling, manage drivers and loading crews, and maintain accurate documentation and inventory records utilizing Tekla and other tracking systems. Tekla is a necessary and integral part of this position and EMW's production process. Primary duties include overseeing forklift operators, overhead cranes, trailer loading equipment, and other material handling equipment used to move raw materials and finished structural steel products in a fast-paced fabrication environment.

Key Responsibilities, Duties, Skills & Abilities

  • Maintain accurate Bills of Lading (BOLs) for all structural fabrication loads leaving EMW.
  • Tag, track, and document structural materials to ensure accurate shipment records and traceability.
  • Coordinate, load, unload, and track all inbound and outbound shipments to jobsites and subcontractors.
  • Manage and organize the yard to maximize safety, efficiency, production flow, manpower utilization, and storage capacity.
  • Conduct inventory counts and maintains inventory accuracy utilizing Tekla and related inventory systems.
  • Stage, organize, and coordinate materials for fabrication, painting, shipping, and receiving operations.
  • Review daily production schedules, delivery schedules, and special loading instructions to prioritize workflow and delivery sequencing.
  • Coordinate shipping, receiving, logistics, and production activities as needed.
  • Supervise, direct, and support shipping personnel, material handlers, drivers, and loading crews.
  • Train employees on proper loading, unloading, rigging, material handling, equipment operation, and safety procedures.
  • Direct helpers engaged in loading activities and dunnage placement.
  • Determine load weights and verify compliance with equipment capacities and DOT requirements.
  • Obtain and report weight and dimensional information required for oversize or special load permits.
  • Inspect and adjust load securement devices, including straps, chains, cables, and rigging equipment.
  • Perform quality control inspections for load damage and ensure corrective action is taken when necessary.
  • Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, conveyors, trailer loading equipment, and other material handling equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Load and unload structural steel from conveyors, trailers, storage areas, and work tables.
  • Properly store, handle, and transport raw materials and fabricated structural steel products.
  • Inspect cables, rigging, lifting devices, and related equipment for wear and safe operation.
  • Ensure tools, lifting devices, and equipment are properly maintained.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe shipping, receiving, and yard areas.
  • Support and enforce all EMW safety policies and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with production, fabrication, paint, and management teams to support operational goals and customer delivery requirements.
  • Ability to work 50–60 hours per week, including weekends, as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous shipping and receiving experience required.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience in material handling, shipping, or structural steel operations preferred.
  • Experience managing and organizing industrial yards and material storage areas.
  • Inventory management experience, including inventory tracking and reconciliation.
  • Tekla experience required. Tekla is a necessary and integral part of this position and EMW's production process and is used for inventory control, material tracking, production coordination, and shipping documentation.
  • Proven ability to manage employees, drivers, and loading crews effectively.
  • Experience training personnel in loading, unloading, rigging, material handling, and safety procedures.
  • Working knowledge of DOT load securement and load limitation requirements.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, communication, and scheduling skills.
  • Attendance at work when assigned is mandatory.
  • Frequently lifting and carrying up to 70 lbs.
  • Frequently walking, standing, stooping, climbing, reaching, and grasping.
  • Requires good vision, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Must adhere to all safety rules and procedures.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to extreme weather and working conditions depending on assignment.

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
  • Previous material handling experience required.
  • Previous forklift and overhead crane experience required.
  • Experience in a structural steel fabrication or industrial manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
