What does a weekend technical do?

A Weekend Technical is a professional who provides technical support and services during weekends, often in IT, broadcasting, or event production environments. Their responsibilities may include troubleshooting equipment, maintaining systems, and ensuring smooth technical operations outside of regular business hours. Weekend Technicals are essential for organizations that operate continuously or have events during weekends, as they ensure any technical issues are promptly addressed. This role may require a broad knowledge of various technologies and excellent problem-solving skills.

What does a typical weekend look like for someone in a weekend technical role, and how does the work schedule differ from standard weekday positions?

In a Weekend Technical position, you can expect your primary work hours to be during weekends, often covering shifts that extend into evenings or nights to ensure continuous technical support. The role typically involves troubleshooting urgent issues, performing maintenance, and supporting end-users or systems while many weekday staff are off. This schedule allows for more autonomy and can mean handling a broader range of technical challenges independently. Collaboration often occurs remotely with on-call colleagues or through shift handovers, and strong communication skills are important for smooth transitions between teams. The unique schedule can also offer flexibility during the week and opportunities to gain experience managing critical incidents.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend technical support specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Technical Support Specialist, you need a solid understanding of troubleshooting, IT fundamentals, and customer service, typically supported by a relevant degree or technical certifications like CompTIA A+ or Microsoft Certified Professional. Familiarity with ticketing systems, remote desktop tools, and knowledge base platforms is commonly required. Strong communication, patience, and multitasking abilities help you resolve issues efficiently and maintain user satisfaction during off-peak hours. These skills ensure reliable technical support coverage, minimize downtime, and uphold service quality when regular staff may not be available.

Job description

Overview

One Hat One Hand is seeking a skilled, detail-oriented Technical Designer to join our multidisciplinary team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in custom fabrication, industrial design, or architecture, and a deep understanding of construction methodologies across a wide range of materials. This role requires the ability to produce precise, industry-standard technical drawings at a fast pace to support clients, architects, engineers, and both internal and external production teams. In addition to producing detailed technical documentation, the role includes elements of presentation design and project management. We're seeking someone who thrives in a collaborative environment, communicates clearly, is passionate about creative problem-solving, and sees their projects come to life before their eyes. Given the collaborative hands-on nature of our design/build practice, this is an in-person position.

Primary Responsibilities

The following are key duties and responsibilities of a Technical Designer at OHOH:

  • Develop clear, constructible 3D design concepts and supporting visualizations in collaboration with the Design Studio Manager and Production Department.
  • Produce accurate technical drawing sets for clients, engineers, and fabrication teams
  • Collaborate closely with internal production, finishing, and metal departments throughout the lifecycle of the project
  • Generate documentation for coordination with external consultants including structural and MEP engineers, and for permitting processes
  • Create cut files and CNC-ready documents for internal fabrication and external vendors
  • Answer key questions and problem-solve in collaboration with the fabrication team
  • Support presentation efforts through design decks and visual storytelling
  • Participate in project planning meetings and stakeholder communication
  • Coordinate material sourcing and ensure scheduled fabrication teams have everything needed to complete their tasks
  • Keep expense reports up to date and track purchases against project estimates

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Professional experience in technical design for architecture, industrial design, or stagecraft and event production
  • Strong custom fabrication background and knowledge of construction methodologies and best practices
  • Skilled in Rhino, G-suite, Adobe Suite and CAD. Proficient in Sketchup, Vectorworks, V-Ray, Enscape, Blender, or Unreal a plus.
  • Knowledge of designing for wood, steel, aluminum, acrylic, foams, plastics, casting and finishing
  • Experience processing graphics packages for printing on a variety of materials and substrates
  • Digital fabrication experience including CNC, laser cutting, waterjet, and 3d printing
  • Knowledge of LED lighting design, wiring and programming
  • Highly creative, detail-oriented, and strong critical thinking
  • Clear and concise written and spoken communication skills

Personal Attributes & General Requirements

  • Willing to travel and work during evenings, weekends, or extended hours when required
  • Positive attitude and flexibility with tight deadlines and changing scopes
  • Ability to problem-solve through unknown design challenges
  • Strong interest in continued professional development
