Job description

The Electrical Superintendent will lead and oversee all electrical installations, power distribution, and maintenance activities supporting TBM operations and tunnel construction for the Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 project. This role is responsible for ensuring safe, reliable, code-compliant electrical systems across the tunnel works, including temporary power networks, substations/switchgear, shafts, ventilation systems, dewatering/pumping controls, and site facilities. The Electrical Superintendent is critical to maintaining continuous TBM operations and minimizing downtime in a demanding underground environment.

The Electrical Superintendent’s key responsibilities are:

  • Supervise electrical installations and operations for high- and low-voltage systems across tunnel works, shafts, and site facilities.
  • Manage power distribution to support TBM operation (main drives, auxiliary systems, backup power, and controls), ensuring uninterrupted supply for critical activities.
  • Lead temporary power planning and execution, including load calculations, distribution layouts, and safe routing as tunnel advance progresses.
  • Coordinate with TBM OEM/manufacturer teams to integrate electrical systems, support troubleshooting, and ensure compliance with TBM technical requirements.
  • Oversee electrical maintenance and reliability programs for all tunnel electrical infrastructure, including preventative maintenance and rapid response to failures.
  • Provide hands-on commissioning support during installation, testing, energization, and turnover of electrical systems—driving quick resolution of faults to reduce downtime.
  • Supervise and coordinate electrical crews and subcontractors, ensuring productivity, quality workmanship, and compliance with project standards and schedules.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, NYC Electrical Code, and project specifications, including inspection readiness, documentation, and coordination with QA/QC.
  • Implement and enforce safety procedures including LOTO, grounding/bonding, arc flash awareness, energized work controls, and underground-specific hazards.
  • Interface with utility providers and project stakeholders for service coordination, outages, tie-ins, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with tunneling, mechanical, and construction teams to align electrical sequencing with TBM advance plans, ventilation, pumping, hoisting, and overall construction activities.
  • Monitor energy usage and optimize efficiency where feasible across temporary and permanent systems.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Electrical Engineering degree or equivalent technical education/experience in electrical construction and supervision.
  • 8–10+ years of progressive experience as an Electrical Superintendent/Supervisor on major infrastructure projects; tunneling/underground experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex electrical distribution and maintenance programs in demanding construction environments.
  • Strong knowledge of NEC and applicable NYC electrical codes, plus electrical safety standards and best practices.
  • Proven ability to lead field teams, coordinate subcontractors, and manage multiple work fronts under schedule pressure.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills; comfortable making decisions in time-sensitive situations.
  • Excellent communication skills; able to work effectively with field leadership, engineers, OEM reps, and client stakeholders.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Field-based role supporting active tunnel construction and TBM operations; may require rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays based on project needs.
  • Exposure to confined spaces, limited lighting, noise, vibration, dust, water ingress, and variable temperatures.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders/scaffolds; navigate uneven terrain; and work around heavy equipment for extended periods.
  • Consistent use of PPE (hard hat, boots, eye/ear protection; respiratory protection as required).
