Weekend Software information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, knowledge of software development methodologies, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, coding frameworks, and collaborative tools such as Jira or Slack is expected. Excellent time management, communication skills, and the ability to work independently help set you apart in this flexible role. These abilities ensure that projects are delivered efficiently and to a high standard, even on a non-traditional schedule.

What are Weekend Software jobs?

Weekend Software jobs refer to positions where software professionals work primarily on weekends, either as part-time employees, contractors, or freelancers. These roles can involve a range of tasks such as software development, testing, maintenance, or technical support. Weekend Software jobs are ideal for those seeking flexibility, additional income, or opportunities to gain experience outside of the traditional Monday-to-Friday workweek. Companies may offer such roles to ensure continuous development cycles, cover urgent tasks, or provide 24/7 support. The nature of the work and required skills are similar to standard software jobs, but with schedules focused on weekends.

What is the difference between Weekend Software vs Weekend Web Developer?

Weekend Software and Weekend Web Developer roles share overlapping skills like coding and remote work environments. However, Weekend Software focuses more on software programming and application development, while Weekend Web Developer emphasizes web design and front-end technologies. Both roles are in high demand in tech and digital industries, but they cater to different technical specializations.

How does working as a Weekend Software Engineer typically differ from a standard weekday software engineering role?

As a Weekend Software Engineer, you'll often tackle high-priority tasks or provide critical support during off-peak hours, when fewer team members are present. This role may involve more autonomy, as well as direct communication with stakeholders to resolve urgent issues or deploy updates with minimal disruption. While you might not participate in all weekday team meetings, effective asynchronous communication is essential to stay aligned with broader project goals. The weekend schedule can offer flexibility, but it also requires strong self-management and the ability to quickly address unexpected technical challenges.

Job summary

We're looking for a Software Engineer who wants who will be a productive contributor to a core product platform trusted by some of the largest organizations on the planet. The codebase is mature, the scale is real, and the work is meaningful. You'll be expected to understand what you're building and why, raise concerns when something doesn't add up, and take pride in what ships with your name on it.

What you will do

  • Own tasks end-to-end, clarify requirements, implement, and work with our QA team to deliver features
  • Write clean, maintainable code across both our API and UI, following established architecture patterns
  • Build and modify front-end features using HTML, JavaScript (vanilla, jQuery, and Vue.js), and CSS
  • Write efficient SQL queries and develop a solid understanding of the data you're working with
  • Collaborate with product managers, QA, and engineers across teams to deliver well-understood, well-tested work
  • Participate actively in code reviews with a goal to improve the codebase and your own skills
  • Investigate and resolve defects, support escalations, and follow issues through to resolution
  • Coordinate with partner teams on cross-service changes, raising integration risks early
  • Leverage AI tools (GitHub Copilot and others) as a standard part of your development workflow
  • Look for opportunities to improve what you touch: code quality, test coverage, documentation, process

What you will have

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • 3+ years of professional software development experience
  • Working knowledge of PHP or other server-side language, and willingness to develop PHP fluency quickly
  • Solid understanding of relational databases and SQL
  • Familiarity with REST API design and consumption
  • Experience with Git and collaborative development workflows
  • Ability to work independently on well-defined tasks while communicating proactively when blockers arise
  • A mindset oriented toward ownership, quality, and continuous improvement, not just task completion

Nice to have

  • Experience with front-end frameworks, particularly Vue.js
  • Exposure to Docker, Linux/Apache environments, or nginx
  • Experience with PHP-based web applications
  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum workflows and JIRA

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Retirement savings programs with company matching (401(k) or RRSP)
  • Generous paid time off, including holidays, and vacation
  • Paid parental leave and family support benefits
  • Life and disability coverage
  • Flexible spending and health savings options (where applicable)
  • Health and wellness support, including gym reimbursement and wellness programs
  • Employee Assistance Program with 24/7confidential support for employees and families
  • Education assistance and professional development opportunities
  • Access to LinkedIn Learning and continuous learning resources
  • Employee referral bonus program and additional company perks and discounts
  • Internal rewards and recognition platform (Motivosity) to celebrate and acknowledge project wins, milestone achievements, and the outstanding contributions of our colleagues
  • Business travel insurance and global employee support programs
