What does a Weekend Shift Engineer do?

A Weekend Shift Engineer is responsible for overseeing the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment and systems during weekend shifts. Their duties often include troubleshooting technical issues, performing routine maintenance, and ensuring all systems run smoothly when regular weekday staff are off duty. They may work in industries such as manufacturing, facilities management, IT, or building services. This role requires technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently during non-standard hours.

The Weekend Shift Engineer and Maintenance Technician roles share similar work environments and industry usage, often requiring technical certifications. Both roles are essential for operational continuity, especially during weekend shifts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Shift Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Shift Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree or technical certification. Familiarity with building management systems (BMS), CMMS software, and basic hand or diagnostic tools is essential. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time management skills help you respond quickly and effectively to urgent issues during off-hours. These skills are crucial to ensure uninterrupted operations, safety, and efficiency during less-supervised weekend shifts.

How does working as a Weekend Shift Engineer impact work-life balance, and what support is typically provided for those on non-traditional schedules?

As a Weekend Shift Engineer, you’ll primarily work during weekends, which can provide flexibility for personal commitments during the week but may require adjustment to your social and family routines. Many organizations recognize the challenges of non-traditional hours and offer additional support such as shift differentials, on-site amenities, and rotating schedules to help maintain a healthy work-life balance. Team structures often include cross-communication with weekday engineers to ensure seamless handovers and support, and many companies encourage regular feedback to address any concerns about workload or scheduling.

Job description

About Us
Maybell Quantum is redefining the future of computing. As a venture-backed quantum hardware innovator experiencing rapid growth, we're building technology that will transform industries for decades to come. Quantum computers will be as transformative to the next 30 years as the internet was to the last 30-and our team is creating the hardware foundation to make this revolution possible.
We are seeking an Associate Product Engineer to support the development, improvement, and execution of our cryogenic systems. This role is ideal for a recent engineering graduate who enjoys working hands-on with hardware and wants to develop broad engineering experience in a fast-paced startup environment.
Role Overview
As a member of the Product team, you will work closely with Product Managers, Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain to support the execution and continuous improvement of Maybell's products. You will spend time both on the production floor and working with cross-functional teams to build, troubleshoot, test, document, and improve complex cryogenic systems.
This role provides an opportunity to develop a deep understanding of our products while building the technical and problem-solving skills necessary to grow into increasingly independent engineering responsibilities.
Responsibilities
  • Build, assemble, troubleshoot, and validate cryogenic pre-production systems and subassemblies.
  • Create assembly documentation, work instructions, and engineering records. Train technicians for new and revised work instructions.
  • Support engineering change implementation, documentation updates, and product releases.
  • Investigate product, manufacturing, and test issues to identify root causes and recommend solutions.
  • Support Product Managers and Engineers in executing product development and sustaining engineering activities.
  • Analyze production and test data to identify opportunities for quality, reliability, and process improvements.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain to resolve technical issues.
  • Participate in prototype builds, product validation, and new product introduction activities.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on product quality, manufacturability, and operational efficiency.
  • Develop technical ownership of assigned assemblies and product areas over time.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 0-2 years of engineering experience, including internships, co-ops, undergraduate research, or relevant project work.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in working directly with hardware.
  • Demonstrated analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, collaborative startup environment.
  • Willingness to work hands-on in both engineering and production environments.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with CAD software, such as OnShape and GD&T standards.
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings and mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience with laboratory equipment, instrumentation, or manufacturing processes.
  • Exposure to vacuum systems, cryogenics, thermal systems, or precision electromechanical assemblies.
  • Experience using data analysis tools such as Excel, Python, or MATLAB.

What We Offer
  • Competitive Compensation: Base salary range $80,000-$90,000 with additional compensation through performance bonuses and equity options in one of the country's most promising startups. This is an exempt position where work can span weekends and/or extension beyond a standard day shift schedule.
  • Growth Trajectory: Significant opportunities for professional development and career advancement in a rapidly scaling organization
  • Impact: Direct influence on the success of a company developing revolutionary technology
  • Exceptional Team: Collaboration with world-class scientists, engineers, and business leaders who are defining a new industry
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Health, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) matching, flexible PTO policy, and more
