Job description

The Gasoline Aftertreatment Technology Expert will handle investigating and developing gasoline aftertreatment systems (ATS) technologies to meet required emissions standards (e.g. TIER4, California LEV IV, EURO7, China 7, PL8, etc.) for future propulsion applications. Development activities will focus on three-way advanced catalyst (TWC) technologies and gasoline particulate filter (GPF) using a demonstrated strong background in substrate, filter, and catalyst washcoat and platinum group metal (PGM) development. This position is on-site at the Chrysler Technology Center in Auburn Hills, MI.

The Gasoline Aftertreatment Technology Expert will demonstrate proof-of-concept solutions to ensure Propulsion functional objectives are satisfied. Projects will utilize engine dynos, vehicle chassis dynamometers, and/or simulation/modeling to make physics-based decisions.

The Gasoline Aftertreatment Technology Expert will have the following responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate proof-of-concept solutions to prove Propulsion System functional goals are satisfied utilizing engine and vehicle chassis dynamometers and/or simulation/modeling to make physics-based decisions
  • Investigate new, innovative emissions system technologies such as advanced catalyst technologies and optimized, low PGM solutions
  • Develop ATS solutions for future vehicles that account for system trade-offs of cost, performance, complexity, etc., while meeting all quality and regulatory requirements
  • Develop requirements for catalyst component plant and control models (including catalyst and aging characterization)
  • Develop TWC system requirements for HW, controls, and calibration
  • Define and direct multiple externally based technology development projects at both suppliers and/or partners to meet ATS critical needs
  • Plan, test, analyze, and solve complex system problems as they relate to the entire propulsion system to meet key objectives such as powertrain performance, emissions, diagnostics, NVH, quality, fuel economy, etc.
  • Support quality improvement efforts, share lessons learned from internal and post-production experience to prevent future recurrence, and perform benchmarking analysis
  • Lead and/or support production development activities leading to and enabling vehicle launch (ATS procurement, supplier interactions, PPAP, APQP, aging, etc.)

This position will report directly to the US-based Manager for Emissions and Aftertreatment and operate under the general direction of the Global Director for Emissions and Aftertreatment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry or related degree
  • 5+ years of experience in demonstrated gasoline ATS development
  • In-depth understanding of advanced catalyst technologies (substrates and catalyst washcoat design and coating) related to TWCs and GPFs for gasoline engines: hardware, emissions calibration, diagnostics, controls, modeling/simulation, etc.
  • Ability to plan, test, analyze, and solve complex system problems as they relate to the entire propulsion system to meet key objectives such as performance, emissions, backpressure, diagnostics, NVH, quality, fuel economy, etc.
  • Apply proper procedures and methodologies for project management (planning, scheduling, and reporting) to reach project deliverables including use of tools such as: MS Project, Excel, etc.
  • Experience with Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) proactive engineering methods, including Design of Experiments (DoE)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively operate both independently and as part of a team
  • Self-motivated and proactive

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry or related discipline
  • 7+ years of experience in gasoline aftertreatment system development, especially including catalyst washcoat design
  • 5+ years of experience with catalyst characterization testing (e.g., performance: benchtop reactor, dyno evaluation, or chemical: SEM, XRF, BET, XRD, FTIR, ICP, etc.)
  • In-depth understanding of advanced catalyst technologies related to TWCs and GPFs for gasoline engines: hardware, emissions calibration, diagnostics, controls, modeling/simulation, etc.
  • In-depth understanding of emissions system controls and ability to create functional models / trend analysis using tools such as MATLAB, GT Power, Simulink, etc.
  • Working level knowledge with GT-Power, AVL Boost, AxiSuite and/or similar tools for emissions system simulation and analysis
