What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Nanny, you need experience in childcare, knowledge of child development, and often CPR/first aid certification. Familiarity with scheduling apps, communication tools, and sometimes light housekeeping equipment is beneficial. Patience, reliability, and strong communication skills help build trust with both children and parents. These skills ensure a safe, nurturing environment and smooth coordination with families during weekend care.

What are some common challenges faced by weekend nannies, and how can they be managed effectively?

Weekend nannies often face the challenge of quickly adapting to different family routines and expectations in a limited timeframe. Because weekends may include special activities, outings, or irregular schedules, flexibility and strong communication with parents are essential. Building rapport with children quickly, maintaining consistency with house rules, and managing transitions smoothly are key strategies for success. Staying organized and proactive in discussing plans with the family can help ensure a positive and productive weekend for everyone involved.

About the Family
This warm, culturally connected family - fluent in both Portuguese and English - is raising two young children in Westfield, Indiana. They are intentional, grounded parents who lead with emotional awareness and structure. They value consistency, calm leadership, and genuine connection, and they are looking for a nanny who will grow with their family for years to come.
They are not looking to fill a position. They are looking for the right person - someone they can trust, invest in, and build a lasting partnership with.

About the Children
Child 1: age 6
Their oldest child has an autism diagnosis and is a bright, spirited child who thrives with predictability, movement, and a caregiver who brings calm, proactive energy. She does best with smooth transitions, visual cues, and plenty of physical engagement - outdoor play, scooter rides, playground time, sensory activities, and structured movement throughout the day. She responds beautifully to a caregiver who reads her cues and stays one step ahead.

Child 2: age 4
Their younger child is affectionate, playful, and independent-spirited. He thrives with encouragement, sibling connection, and a structured environment that still leaves room for creativity and exploration.

Key Responsibilities
Morning Hours (While Children Are at School)
Plan and prepare age-appropriate craft projects, sensory activities, and educational enrichment materials for afternoon use
Complete light child-related household tasks including children's laundry, meal prep, and snack preparation
Organize children's spaces, supplies, and activity areas
Prepare children's items for the following school day including lunchboxes, backpacks, and school items
Afternoon Hours (After School Pick-Up)
Manage afternoon school pick-ups and support smooth, structured transitions from school to home
Facilitate movement-based outdoor and indoor activities planned during the morning hours
Support emotional regulation using calm, proactive, and consistent strategies - particularly for the oldest child
Escort children to weekly swimming lessons (mileage reimbursement provided)
Assist with homework and serve as a positive, encouraging homework helper
Prepare healthy after-school snacks and light dinner for the children
Anticipate and manage transitions throughout the afternoon to reduce overwhelm and support predictability
Provide daily updates and collaborate closely with parents on routines and communication

Ideal Candidate Qualifications
3 to 5 or more years of childcare experience, with a minimum of 1 year of professional nanny experience
The ideal candidate has prior experience supporting children with autism, sensory processing needs, or special needs. If no experience, someone willing to engage in professional development that the family will assist with facilitating.
Creative and proactive - you genuinely enjoy planning and preparing enriching activities, not just executing them
Calm, emotionally attuned, and consistent - especially during transitions and moments of dysregulation
Own reliable vehicle with valid driver's license, clean driving record, and current insurance (mileage reimbursement provided)
CPR and First Aid certified, or willing to obtain certification prior to start date
Fluent in English; the family is bilingual in Portuguese and English and warmly welcomes candidates who share or appreciate that cultural connection - not a requirement
Must be at least 21 years of age
       Non-smoker
       Fully vaccinated
Authorized to work in the United States
Willing to complete comprehensive background check and reference verification
       Strong, verifiable professional childcare references
Committed to a long-term placement of 2 or more years
Local to the Indianapolis or Westfield, Indiana area, or within reasonable commuting distance
