THE POSITION As a Mining Engineer with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), you will apply engineering expertise to ensure mining activities follow state and federal laws. You will review proposals, assess subsidence risks, and work with professionals to protect structures, streams, and public safety. DESCRIPTION OF WORK This position supports the review and evaluation of underground mining proposals to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. You will assess engineering plans, identify risks, and coordinate with mining professionals and internal staff.

As a Mining Engineer, you will perform the following duties: Permit Review: Evaluate mining permit applications, draft deficiency letters, and recommend solutions to regulatory issues Subsidence Analysis: Analyze underground mining plans to assess subsidence risks and determine impacts on structures and environmental features Regulatory Compliance: Ensure mining proposals meet requirements of state and federal laws, including protection of streams, utilities, and buildings Data Evaluation: Review certified mine maps, monitor mining progress, and document violations for enforcement when needed Technical Coordination: Work with hydrogeologists, engineers, and safety specialists to evaluate mining impacts and protect sensitive features Interested in learning more. Work Schedule and Additional Information: Full-time employment Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Coal Center.

The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview. Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $75,658.00 (before taxes)

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: Two years as a Mining Engineering Specialist (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Four years of professional experience in mining engineering, and possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or Three years of professional mining engineering experience, and possession of a valid Professional Engineer license issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or Three years of professional experience in mining engineering, and a bachelor's degree in mining engineering.

Graduate study in mining engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Conditions of Employment: This position requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver's license. This position requires possession of a valid Professional Engineer license issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
