Impact lives with Management & Training Corporation (MTC)! At the Otero County Processing  Facility's Medical Unit in Chaparral, New Mexico, our foundation is based upon the philosophies of caring about others, giving back, and making a social impact. We provide a safe and secure working environment for our staff while helping an at-risk population receive the treatment necessary for success on their road back to a healthy, productive life.

What you'll do: You'll report administratively to the health services administrator and be responsible for planning and implementing professional mental health service programs including psychiatric services for residents of the facility. You'll also provide mental health services to inmates in compliance with MTC Medical and various customer directives. 

Essential Functions:  

  • Provide coordinated mental health services to the inmate population, overseeing all aspects of mental health and behavioral treatment while ensuring the safety of both inmates and staff in a secure environment. 
  • Diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe appropriate medications, and develop treatment plans based on thorough evaluations. Provide ongoing psychiatric care, including emergency interventions, ensuring inmate and staff safety during any crises. 
  • Perform mental health assessments, including suicide prevention, identifying abnormal behaviors, and defusing potentially disruptive situations, while maintaining a secure and controlled environment. 
  • Recommend psychiatric and other mental health evaluations and coordinate with other mental health professionals to ensure comprehensive care, always adhering to prison safety protocols and confidentiality standards. 
  • Collaborate with internal departments and external organizations to ensure the continuity of mental health services, while taking security and safety measures into account during interactions and transitions. 
  • Develop and implement therapeutic programs to address the mental health needs of inmates, ensuring the safe delivery of services in a high-security environment. 
  • Maintain and audit inmate mental health records, ensuring confidentiality and strict compliance with HIPAA regulations. Prepare progress reports, discharge recommendations, and contribute to statistical reports while adhering to correctional facility policies. 
  • Promote positive social skills among inmates by modeling appropriate behaviors, intervening when necessary, and providing regular feedback to staff on intervention techniques and effective mental health management strategies to enhance security and rehabilitation. 
  • Serve on an on-call rotation to provide after-hours and weekend mental health care, including emergency interventions, ensuring quick and effective responses to any psychiatric emergencies while prioritizing inmate and staff safety. 
  • Ensure safety practices and maintain accountability for inmates and property, ensuring that mental health treatments are provided within a secure framework that minimizes risk to all parties involved. 
  • Maintain current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification and be prepared to perform CPR in emergencies, responding quickly to medical emergencies in the prison setting. 
  • Regular on-site attendance is required to provide consistent care and ensure that safety protocols are upheld in all clinical and behavioral interactions with inmates. 
  • Maintain accountability of inmates and property, adhere to safety practices, and ensure that all mental health services are delivered with consideration for security measures and the well-being of all involved. 

It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management. 

Education and Experience Requirements: 

  • Completion of an accredited physician's assistant program and a current license or completion of an accredited Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) program and a current license and certification as an PMHNP is required. 
  • Current DEA registration unless state practice regulations permit other prescribing arrangements under supervision also required. 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must remain current. 
  • Two to five years' experience is recommended, preferably in the correctional or psychiatric setting. 
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management. 

Post Hire Requirements: Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements and maintain appropriate facility clearance.
