What is weekend IT support?

Weekend IT Support professionals provide technical assistance and troubleshooting services during weekends when regular IT staff may not be available. Their responsibilities typically include resolving hardware and software issues, responding to user queries, monitoring systems for problems, and ensuring that critical services remain operational outside of standard business hours. These roles are vital for organizations that operate around the clock or need to maintain uptime and security during weekends.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges faced by weekend IT support staff?

Weekend IT Support professionals are primarily responsible for monitoring systems, responding to urgent technical issues, and providing assistance to users during off-peak hours. They often work independently or with a small team, which means they must be comfortable troubleshooting a wide range of hardware and software problems without immediate access to specialized colleagues. A common challenge is managing critical incidents with limited resources, requiring strong problem-solving skills and clear communication to escalate issues when necessary. This role is ideal for those who enjoy autonomy and are proactive in maintaining system reliability outside regular business hours.

Strong communication, patience, and problem-solving skills help you support end-users and remain effective during high-pressure or off-hours situations. These competencies ensure minimal downtime, reliable support coverage, and positive user experiences during critical weekend operations.

Job description

IT Support Technician

3 Month Contract with Possible Conversion

Onsite 5 days per week Monday - Friday 8-5pm CT

$25/hr

A well-established organization is seeking an IT Support Technician to provide responsive, hands-on technology support across its business locations. This position supports the systems employees rely on every day, including computers, software, email, phones, networks, printers, audiovisual equipment, and select building technology.

The ideal candidate enjoys troubleshooting, working directly with users, and handling a mix of desktop support and practical, hands-on technical work. The role requires strong communication, organization, and the flexibility to support multiple locations and occasionally work outside normal business hours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to employee technology requests and manage issues through a ticketing/work-order system.
  • Diagnose and resolve computer hardware, software, printer, peripheral, connectivity, and general user issues both onsite and remotely.
  • Install, configure, upgrade, replace, and maintain computers, software applications, and related hardware.
  • Assist with technology rollouts and system implementations, including integration, user support, and training.
  • Gather information about business processes and user needs, research available options, and help identify practical technical solutions.
  • Maintain computers, electronic equipment, audiovisual systems, and other technology resources.
  • Provide technical assistance for building and campus lighting systems, including work performed outdoors and at elevated locations.
  • Coordinate installations and technology changes with users and management, communicating schedule adjustments, resource needs, and expected downtime.
  • Plan maintenance and system work during lower-impact periods whenever possible.
  • Support additional technology projects and operational needs as assigned.
  • Be available for occasional evening or weekend work when business or system requirements demand it.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent education is required.
  • Candidates should have foundational experience supporting computers and devices in a Windows environment.
  • One to three years of experience working within an IT department is preferred
  • Candidates should be comfortable with Microsoft Office applications and understand computer hardware well enough to install, upgrade, troubleshoot, and replace components.
  • Familiarity with basic electrical concepts, including voltage, current, and wattage, is helpful
  • Success in this position requires a service-oriented mindset, clear written and verbal communication, dependable follow-through, and the ability to organize multiple priorities.
  • Candidates should work effectively as part of a team while also being comfortable independently investigating and resolving technical problems.

Above all, the successful candidate will be adaptable, curious, and willing to learn new technologies while taking ownership of a broad range of IT support responsibilities.
