Job description

Department: Surgery - Acute Care Surgery & Critical Care (ACS&CC)

Schedule: Friday, Saturday and Sunday Coverage (12-hour shifts - hours negotiable)
FTE: 1.0 Full-Time Equivalent

Position Summary:
This Physician Assistant position will provide dedicated weekend coverage for the Acute Care Surgery (ACS&CC) team. The PA will focus on providing all aspects for inpatients on the surgical service or in the ICU. This provider will work closely with the residency team for weekend patient coverage.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Perform inpatient rounds and contribute to clinical decision-making.
  • Coordinate admissions and transfers to ensure seamless transitions of care.
  • Document all patient encounters accurately and timely in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Provide first or second assist in the operating room
  • Coordinate patient discharges and ensure follow-up care is arranged
  • Respond to Emergency Department ACS&CC consults and provide timely evaluations
  • Collaborate with attending surgeons, residents, nursing staff, and other departments.
  • Support trauma and acute care protocols during high-acuity situations.
  • Participate in weekend hand-offs and care coordination meetings as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and team members
  • Effectively partner with other members of the ACS & CC team (surgeons, APP, residents, medical students)
  • Support the mission of education, research and quality
Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current NYS licensure and national certification (NCCPA).
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required.
  • Willing to audit or ATLS certified
  • 1-2 years of experience preferred; experience in emergency, trauma, or acute surgical care is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
  • Strong communication and decision-making skills.
