HEALTH CARE AIDE
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, to perform a variety of activities including specialized health care services; to assist the school nurse and other staff in providing health program assistance, to maintain health records, referrals and reports, and to assist students with other health related needs.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Provides specialized health care services for students such as wheelchair positioning, lifting, toileting, chest percussion, emergency injections, medications requiring specialized procedures, catheterization, tube feeding, feeding, ostomy care tracheotomy suctioning, and other procedures which are necessary during the school day to enable a child to attend school.
• Performs routine first aid procedures and screens ill or injured children, including those suspected of having head lice, according to established procedures.
• Under the direction of the school nurse, audits student records for proper immunizations and verification of required tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux). Alerts parents of needed immunizations and maintains communication until records of immunizations are provided. Maintains an accurate list of students exempted from the immunization program.
• Maintains an accurate list of students with health conditions and needs.
• Assists with the preparation and arrangements for health testing programs performed by the school nurse.
• Records student health test results in student health files.
• Communicates with parents regarding health issues as directed by site supervisor.
• Administers CPR in emergency situations. Refers other emergencies to school nurse or to site supervisor.
• Performs a variety of routine clerical duties for the health office: typing, filing, and duplicating materials as needed.
• Assists with administration of medications according to District policy.
• Conducts inspections of students for communicable diseases under the direction of the school nurse. Assists in follow-up activities directed toward the prevention and control of communicable diseases.
• Requisitions health care and health office supplies as needed. Assembles first aid kits for classrooms and health office.
• Provides health information and assistance to students, parents, and others as needed.
• Prepares, maintains, and records a variety of records related to daily health services activities, including medication, administration records, daily logs of health office visits, and presenting symptoms of students.

• Assists in distribution of approved health information. Prepares health education information as requested by school nurse. Attends all required in-service programs as assigned by Administrator of Education Support Services.
• Assists parents and children in locating local health agencies and related services. Contracts clinics regarding fees and other information, and assists parents and students in making appointments as necessary.
• Refers students to counselors, psychologists, or substance abuse counselors as needed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
CPR and first aid techniques; health and safety procedures
Standard policies and procedures pertaining to student health services
Equipment, supplies, and terminology commonly associated with a
student health facility
Modern office practices, procedures and equipment
English grammar, usage, and spelling
Ability to:
Perform routine first aid and emergency treatment for ill and injured students
