Reports To: Facilities Manager, then Business Manager

Position Summary:
The Custodian - Evening & Weekend is responsible for performing custodial duties, minor routine maintenance and repairs, attending to requests from the Facility Manager or Head Custodian to repair items and attend to emergencies or security matters and other miscellaneous duties in order to ensure that our school and grounds are maintained in a healthy, sanitary, safe and secure manner for our families, students and staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Be available to work a flexible shift between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. on weekdays during the school year from August through May, plus a flexible shift on Sundays between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. year-round. Weekday hours worked during scheduled school breaks, including summer break, will consist of scheduled shift between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. Some holidays may be required.
  • Be responsible for opening and/or closing the school, which includes securing the building and having a working knowledge of the security system.
  • Perform everyday cleaning, vacuuming and trash removal.
  • Dust all furniture and fixtures and sanitize school equipment, as required.
  • Wipe down and disinfect classroom desks, chairs, tables, and garbage cans.
  • Mop hard surface floors.
  • Clean entrances and exits including glass, doors, and hardware.
  • Replenish all toilet tissue, hand towels and soap, as needed.
  • Wash and disinfect all washroom floors, toilets, fixtures, paper towel holders, mirrors, and partitions.
  • Clean up blood, saliva, and other bodily fluids following standard precautions and designated protocols.
  • Empty all waste baskets and garbage cans and place all garbage in the outside bin.
  • Be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a daily basis. Be able to move heavy furniture and equipment safely with the help of other staff members.
  • Climb ladders, access the roof for maintenance, and operate indoor cleaning equipment and outdoor lawn care equipment in safe manner in accordance with safety training.
  • Maintain storage areas, equipment, materials, and supplies in a safe and orderly manner to ensure safety of staff and public.
  • Remove weeds and litter from school grounds.
  • Sweep sidewalks and play pads.
  • Shovel snow and operate a snow blower.
  • Shampoo or steam clean the carpets and rugs.
  • Event set-up and/or breakdown.
  • Prepare and paint indoor and outdoor surfaces as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Follow all policies and procedures established by the Excel Academy Board of Directors and Administration.

Experience: Previous custodial experience is preferred
Education: High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
Certificates, Licenses, & Registrations: First Aid & CPR certificate highly recommended
Skills/Knowledge/Ability:
  • Candidates must demonstrate the following skills and abilities:
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills and be able to relate positively and cooperatively with staff, students, and community.
  • Ability to work as team member with the custodial staff and other members of the Excel Academy community.
  • Ability to stay on task.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain and make basic repairs on furniture, bathroom fixtures, lockers, lights and other areas as needed.
  • Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, possess basic math skills, particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products.
  • Ability to stand, walk, lift, sweep, mop, move furniture and operate equipment for a sustained period of time over an 8-hour work shift.
  • Be responsible and self-motivated.
  • Demonstrate good decision-making skills.

Equipment: Computer (desktop/laptop/tablet) and communications technology equipment including software, office equipment (copy machine, fax, etc.), e-mail, and voice mail.
Community Relations: Regular contact with community members, families, and school leaders to exchange information with regard to the students. Requires a high degree of confidentiality.

Physical Demands: This position may experience high exposure to disease from bodily fluids due to contact with sick or injured students. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Mental Functions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to coordinate and use interpersonal skills. Employee must be able to work independently. The employee is frequently required to compare, analyze, communicate, compute, evaluate, compile, and negotiate.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. High exposure to self to bruises due to maintaining/fixing building property, cuts due to disposing of broken glass, chemical burns due to cleaning chemicals, and disease due to disposing of bodily fluids. Also, high exposure to the same hazards for others if person in this position does not respond timely to accidents, broken equipment, or other hazards, or does not properly dispose of or maintain hazardous materials. High exposure to self to back injury and repetitive motion injury due to daily tasks. Medium exposure to self to fractured bones due to falling or slipping off ladders, hernia due to lifting heavy objects, loss of limb due to motorized equipment, and loss of sight due to handling chemicals. Medium exposure to fractured bones to others due to a person in this position improperly maintaining property. Low exposure to heat burns, disfigurement, and fatality due to motorized equipment.
