Job description

As a family-owned third-party logistics company specializing in refrigerated warehousing and transportation, we play a critical role in moving products throughout the West Coast and around the world.

We're looking for an experienced Drayage Dispatcher to join our Transportation team. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, enjoy solving logistical challenges, and have experience coordinating container movements through the Port of Oakland, we'd like to hear from you.

As a Drayage Dispatcher, you'll be responsible for coordinating the daily movement of import and export containers between Port of Oakland terminals and our facility. You'll serve as the primary communication link between drivers, terminal operators, customers, and internal operations to ensure freight moves safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

Location: Oakland, CA

Salary Range: $80,000-$95,000 annually

Job Responsibilities

  • Act as central point of communication between drivers, terminal operators, internal logistics, and customers
  • Coordinate daily movement of import and export containers between Port of Oakland terminals and company facilities
  • Dispatch drivers by assigning loads, scheduling pickups and deliveries, and optimizing routes to maximize productivity and minimize empty miles.
  • Monitor container status, ERD/LFD dates, terminal appointments, and gate cutoffs to ensure timely freight movement
  • Coordinate appointments with port terminals and company facilities while ensuring required documentation is complete and accurate
  • Monitor driver progress throughout the day using transportation management and tracking systems, providing timely support and route adjustments as needed.
  • Communicate with drivers regarding assignments, delays, equipment issues, and customer requirements
  • Resolve operational issues including chassis availability, equipment shortages, terminal holds, and other service disruptions
  • Verify compliance with DOT Hours of Service requirements and company safety policies.
  • Ensure drivers complete required inspections and documentation, including Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs)
  • Maintain accurate dispatch records and operational data within the Transportation Management System
  • Provide timely updates regarding shipment status to customers, terminal personnel, and internal departments
  • Collaborate with warehouse, customer service, and operations personnel to ensure efficient freight movement
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Work Schedule: This position may require evening, night, weekend, and holiday work to align with Port of Oakland operating hours, customer needs, and business demands.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of experience in drayage or port dispatching
  • Strong working knowledge of local on-dock and off-dock port/terminal operations
  • Familiarity with port and terminal systems (e.g., Emodal, PierPass, SSL portals) and appointment/holds processes.
  • Knowledge of steamship line (SSL) equipment release processes, including website portal and email release requirements
  • Proficiency with Transportation Management Systems (TMS), GPS tracking tools, and basic Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook)
  • Solid understanding of DOT Hours of Service (HOS) and driver compliance requirements.
  • Experience managing driver schedules, routing, and real-time issue resolution in a fast-paced environment.
  • Clear, professional verbal and written communication skills with drivers, terminals, and customers under pressure
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with ability to handle high call/email volume and multiple simultaneous loads
  • Knowledge of chassis types and overweight container requirements for 20' and 40' equipment, including on-hire/off-hire and release processes
  • Successful candidates will be required to pass a post offer, pre-employment drug screen
