What does a typical work schedule and workflow look like for a Weekend Developer?

Weekend Developers usually work part-time hours, primarily on Saturdays and Sundays, either to support project deadlines or to accommodate business operations outside standard workweeks. Their responsibilities often involve handling specific tasks such as coding new features, addressing bugs, or deploying updates, with workflows managed through collaborative tools like Slack, Jira, or Trello. Most communication and project updates happen asynchronously to align with team members in different time zones or working weekdays. This arrangement allows Weekend Developers to contribute meaningfully to team goals while maintaining flexibility, though it requires diligent self-organization and proactive communication.

What is a Weekend Developer job?

A Weekend Developer job typically involves working as a software developer on weekends, either as a part-time role, freelance work, or a side project. These roles can include maintaining existing code, developing new features, or supporting system operations outside regular business hours. Companies may hire Weekend Developers to ensure continuous development, provide support, or meet deadlines. This role is ideal for individuals looking to supplement their income, gain experience, or contribute to open-source or personal projects while managing other weekday commitments.

What jobs pay $500,000 a year in the US?

High-paying jobs for a Weekend Developer or similar roles typically include senior software engineers, technical leads, or specialized consultants with extensive experience and advanced skills. These positions often require expertise in high-demand technologies, a strong portfolio, and sometimes leadership responsibilities, but earning $500,000 annually is rare and usually associated with executive or highly specialized roles rather than standard development positions.

Do developers work on weekends?

Weekend developers are often required to work on weekends, especially if they are involved in project deadlines, maintenance, or support roles. However, work schedules vary by employer and project, with some developers following standard weekday hours and others having flexible or remote schedules.

Will AI replace developers in 2026?

Weekend developers and other software developers are unlikely to be fully replaced by AI in 2026, as AI tools are designed to assist rather than fully automate complex coding tasks. Developers will continue to play a crucial role in designing, testing, and maintaining software, often using AI as a productivity aid. Skills in programming languages, problem-solving, and understanding system architecture remain essential for the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Weekend Developer position, and why are they important?

A Weekend Developer should possess strong programming skills, knowledge of web or software development frameworks, and relevant educational or work experience. Familiarity with source control tools like Git, cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, and common project management systems is typically required. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and effective communication stand out as valuable soft skills. These abilities are vital for balancing limited weekend hours with delivering high-quality results and collaborating with teammates remotely.

Job description

Company Overview

Allen Control Systems (ACS) is a cutting-edge defense startup, founded by two former Navy electrical engineers with a proven track record in robotics and software. We are developing a small, autonomous gun turret that employs advanced computer vision and control systems to precisely target and neutralize small drones and loitering munitions. Our innovative approach requires overcoming significant technical challenges, making this an exciting and dynamic environment for experienced engineers.

With an engineering-first culture, ACS values technical excellence and innovation. Backed by our founders' successful exits from two previous ventures acquired for a combined $180M in 2022, we are committed to ensuring that the groundbreaking technologies we develop will have a real-world impact.

Position Overview

Allen Control Systems is seeking a highly skilled CNC Machinist - Weekend Shift to support prototyping, manufacturing, and assembly. The ideal candidate is technically proficient, safety-conscious, and eager to contribute to innovative production processes in a fast-paced environment.

What You'll Do:

  • Set up and operate CNC mills, lathes, and other multi-axis machines to manufacture complex parts according to engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Program CNC machines using G-code, CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360), or manual programming for prototypes and production runs.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), to ensure parts meet precise tolerances.
  • Perform routine maintenance, tool changes, and troubleshooting on machines to minimize downtime and optimize performance.
  • Inspect finished parts using precision measuring tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, CMMs) and document quality results for compliance.
  • Collaborate with engineers, programmers, and quality teams to refine processes, reduce waste, and improve cycle times.
  • Adhere to safety protocols, including proper use of PPE, and maintain a clean, organized workspace in line with lean manufacturing principles.

What You'll Need:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a CNC machining apprenticeship or vocational program preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of CNC mill and lathe programming experience
  • Proficiency in CNC programming, setup, and operation of mills and lathes.
  • Proficiency with inspection tools and reading technical documents.
  • Proficiency in CAM programming and operation, as well as reading and interpreting complex technical drawings and GD&T standards.
  • Proficient with basic shop tools and machines (manual mill, engine lathe, drill press, bandsaw, belt sanders, hand tools etc.)
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently in a fast-paced manufacturing setting.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary
  • ACS Equity Package
  • Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • Paid Time Off
