Sentara Heart Hospital located on the campus of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia is hiring a Registered Nurse for the Cardiovascular Surgical ICU (CSICU)!

Shifts: Available Weekend Days and Weekend Nights

Up to $20,000 Sign on Bonus available for Qualified Candidates!

The Registered Nursing (RN) is responsible to perform a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process. The standards of practice (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care- teaching and health promotion and evaluation) along with the standards of professional performance (ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence- based practice /nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health) encompass the actions and foundation of professional nursing. The RN possesses clinical knowledge and skills to meet standards as required by specific clinical areas.

Cardiovascular Surgical ICU Unit Description:
  • 20 Bed cardiac surgical ICU
  • Nurses handle 1-2 patients on this unit based on acuity level.
  • Nurses provide service to any patients that have undergone open heart surgeries such as CABG, Valve repair or replacement, aneurysm repair, TAVR, ablations, Heart Transplantation, and Mechanical Circulatory Support devices including the Total Artificial Heart and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), and various lung surgeries.
  • Nurses manage critically ill patients that require intensive hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical ventilation, multiple drug infusions, IABP therapy and CRRT.

Education
  • Associate's degree or Diploma in Registered Nursing (required)
  • Bachelor of Science Nursing- BSN or MSN (Preferred)
Certification/Licensure
  • Virginia RN License Virginia or Compact/Multi-State Eligible.
  • All Direct Care RN's required to have BLS within 90 days of hire and ACLS within 1 year of hire.
Experience
  • 1 year of RN Experience required
  • 1 year of Intermediate - Stepdown level of care with cardiac knowledge ideal, ED, PCU or 1+ years of Medical/Surgical experience.
Nurse Transition to Practice Program:

At Sentara, we are committed to ensuring our nurses thrive from the very beginning of their journey. To support this, all nurses new to critical care will participate in our comprehensive 12-week Transition to Practice program. This program is designed to blend practical skills with hands‑on training, professional development, and mentorship, equipping you with the confidence and expertise needed to excel in our critical care nursing career.

Our Transition to Practice program features a mix of classroom teaching methodologies and a preceptor-based unit orientation. You will engage in 8 sessions that include live simulations, case studies, and problem‑based learning. These sessions cover essential topics such as critical care patient assessment and documentation, respiratory and cardiac care, vasoactive medications, hemodynamics and invasive monitoring, neurological care, post-operative and procedural care, GI/renal systems, ACLS mega code, sedation, analgesia, neuromuscular blockade, and effective communication with providers and families.
