Job Summary

Set-up and troubleshoot multi-axis (dual spindle / dual turret) CNC turn / mill centers to exact dimensional and finish requirements for the products. Review and edit CNC programs as necessary for quick and successful completion of setup of these CNC machines. Participate in the Engineering Department efforts on launch of new products and major process changes.

Essential Functions:

1. Shop floor support

  • Troubleshooting daily with machinists to assure machines running smoothly with capable processes at established production rates and consult engineering as needed.
  • Ensures correct work holding and cutting tools are used in setup and tool life developed for replacing inserts / tools by machinists at prescribed interval for stable processes.
  • Works with production supervisor to ensure priority of workflow to start products on time.
  • Works with manufacturing engineers on new products to assure each part is setup to meet throughput and then document on setup sheets, tools lists, and process routers, as applicable.
  • Work with production, engineering, purchasing, and tooling vendor to manage cutting tool inventory.
  • Work with OEM for training on new equipment as well as maintenance of existing equipment.
  • Analyze quality problems to find root cause and put corrective actions by working with others.
  • Continuous improvement of existing products.
  1. Ensures all parts / processes meet the required specifications by:
  • Reading blueprints, operation drawings, manuals, specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Monitor and maintain cutting tool and work holding inventory system.
  • Comply with all work instructions.
  • Following and maintain ISO, AS, and other Schafer procedures.
  1. Ensure the operational effectiveness of all assigned equipment by:
  • Auditing and/or conducting all assigned and necessary preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Observe machine operations to detect malfunctions or out of tolerance machining and adjust machine controls or other media as applicable.
  • Install tooling into machines and equipment to ensure functionality and performance.
  • Confer with engineers, production personnel, or others to resolve machining problems.
  1. Responsible for supporting the Schafer Business Process by:
  • Continuously identify opportunities for improvement and implement using appropriate methods and working closely with production, quality, and engineering departments.
  • Ensure quality products are produced to have no negative impact on subsequent processes.
  • Recommend improving tooling costs with no compromise to quality or productivity.
  • Prepare tooling, fixtures, workpiece, gages, etc. for jobs located in queue at assigned machines.
  • Monitor and maintain the 6S program in assigned area.
  1. Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the company by:
  • Channeling problems and/or complaints to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Supporting all Schafer policies and procedures.
  • Reporting to supervisor or manager when assignments cannot be completed.
  • Assist in evaluating job applicant's knowledge to supervisor / manager prior to Schafer hiring.
  • Passing along vital information for subsequent shifts.
  • Training new personnel in the operation of assigned machines.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  1. Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 50 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time on cement or other hard surfaces, etc.
  1. Demonstrates the verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms and take messages in a legible, accurate manner. Be able to communicate in English.
  1. Five plus years of experience with CNC machining on turn / mill centers with setups and troubleshooting. Experience with Doosan is preferred. Two-year technical school is preferred.
  2. Ability to use a computer with the following applications: MS Word, MS Excel, E-Mail.

Working Conditions:

  1. Air conditioned/heated manufacturing facility with possible exposure to noise; dust; fumes; physical, chemical, and biohazards; solvents, oils, and detergents.
  1. This job is to be performed at the designated facility 100% of the time unless directed otherwise by manager/supervisor.
