Position Summary
The Substitute Bus Operator is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, school-sponsored activities, and other approved destinations in accordance with all federal, state, and Boone County Schools policies and procedures. The substitute serves on an as-needed basis and must maintain a safe, orderly, and positive environment while operating a school bus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Safely operate a school bus over designated routes and schedules as assigned.
  2. Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the assigned bus and promptly report any mechanical defects or safety concerns.
  3. Maintain appropriate student discipline and ensure a safe environment while students are being transported.
  4. Follow all traffic laws, West Virginia Department of Education regulations, and Boone County Schools transportation policies.
  5. Complete all required transportation records, reports, and documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  6. Maintain regular communication with transportation supervisors regarding route changes, student concerns, accidents, delays, or emergencies.
  7. Assist students with boarding and exiting the bus when necessary, including students with disabilities as required by Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or other accommodations.
  8. Maintain cleanliness and general care of the assigned school bus.
  9. Attend required safety meetings, in-service training, and professional development as required by Boone County Schools and the West Virginia Department of Education.
  10. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation, Transportation Supervisor, or Superintendent.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid West Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements required.
  • Current West Virginia School Bus Operator Certification or ability to obtain certification.
  • Current Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification.
  • Satisfactory driving record and criminal background check as required by law.
  • Successfully complete all required state and county training requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of safe school bus operation and defensive driving techniques.
  • Ability to safely transport students in varying weather and road conditions.
  • Ability to maintain student discipline in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, school personnel, and supervisors.
  • Ability to respond appropriately during emergencies.
  • Dependability, punctuality, and sound judgment.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating a school bus.
  • Ability to climb bus steps and perform required safety inspections.
  • Ability to assist students entering and exiting the bus when necessary.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to meet all physical requirements established by the West Virginia Department of Education and Department of Transportation.

Terms of Employment
Employment is on an as-needed substitute basis. Compensation shall be established by the Boone County Board of Education in accordance with applicable West Virginia Code, Board policy, and approved substitute salary schedules.
Evaluation
Performance shall be evaluated by the Director of Transportation or designee in accordance with Boone County Schools policies and procedures.
