Job description

Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) is one of the largest privately held architecture and engineering firms in the Southeast.

GMC is seeking an Architect with a higher education focus to lead our continued growth in our Atlanta, GA office. The individual serving in this role will provide practice related strategic and critical thinking, team leadership, and will serve as a liaison to the community with regards to project delivery, collaboration, and business development. The Architect with a higher education focus will be responsible for management of the local design studio including, but not limited to: (a) Mentoring staff and coordination of the project team and work assignments; (b) consulting with clients and developing relationships with future clients; (c) participating in the development of design solutions, advising staff on technical decisions, and advising during project bidding and construction including coordination with reviewing agencies, and (d) preparing and administering project schedules and budgets. The ideal candidate will have experience managing architectural projects in the higher education industries, from concept through construction.

Essential functions and responsibilities include:

  • Focus on a specialization in higher education preferred
  • Self-motivated and team oriented
  • Foster new client relationships to enhance practice growth in Georgia region
  • Consult with clients to evaluate their desires/needs and develop designs that meet their goals
  • Oversee the design process to ensure quality in creative and technical design solutions
  • Communicate information with clients and project team members/consultants to ensure project objectives are met
  • Meet with contractors to convey building design intentions, resolve problems and answer questions
  • Coordinate with engineering consultants regarding design and interaction of systems
  • Prepare project proposal and contracts
  • Must be results oriented, able to manage multiple team members involved with multiple complex projects
  • Ability to research and apply building codes, planning and zoning regulations, and similar standards
  • Capable of developing schedule(s) and budget(s) for multiple projects
  • Research products and technologies, and assess applicability to a project or design problem

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture
  • Architecture licensure in Georgia required
  • 10+ years project management as a registered architect
  • Must be knowledgeable with Microsoft Office Suite and Revit
  • Proven understanding of building design and tectonics
  • Excellent listening and communication skills
  • Must be a self-motivated team player with natural ability to establish good working relationships with clients, consultants, contractors, and team members
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred
  • Must be able to perform work related travel and hold a valid driver’s license
