Job description

Position Description Summary/Purpose

The Department of Biology at the University of Bridgeport invites applications for a full time Assistant Professor with expertise in human or comparative anatomy/physiology or related fields. This position supports the University's growing pre health sciences programs and undergraduate prerequisites in the health professions pipeline. We seek candidates who are committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service, and whose research is accessible to undergraduate collaborators and master's degree students.

The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in both lecture and laboratory instruction, have experience with online and hybrid teaching, and a commitment to student success through curriculum development, advising and career mentorship, and collaborative departmental service.

Full time faculty members at the University of Bridgeport are responsible for maintaining the highest academic standards in their disciplines; advising students; developing and maintaining curriculum; staying current with pedagogy and disciplinary knowledge; participating in professional development; fulfilling administrative responsibilities; and contributing to college and community service.

This is a 12 month full time faculty position. Teaching schedules may include days, evenings, and/or weekends according to departmental needs.

Essential Job Functions / Primary Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will have the ability to teach across the undergraduate biology curriculum with a primary focus on human anatomy & physiology and general physiology, serving the needs of pre health science students, biology majors, and General Education requirements.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teach introductory level anatomy and physiology I & II and related lecture and laboratory courses, and additional courses in pre-health science, pre-professional, and biology degree programs as needed.
  • Develop and maintain course materials that align with program outcomes, coordinate the content and rigor of the introductory-level courses, incorporate best pedagogical practices, and follow the UB syllabus template.
  • Design and manage laboratory instruction, emphasizing experimentation, data interpretation, and safe laboratory practices.

  • Advise undergraduate students pre health pathways in collaboration with professional advisors and program directors.

  • Implement shared syllabi, shared assessments, and coordinated instructional materials where applicable.

  • Apply evidence based teaching practices, including effective use of Canvas and online instructional tools.

  • Assess student learning outcomes and use data to improve teaching and curriculum.

  • Engage in research, scholarship, or professional activity appropriate to the discipline and accessible to undergraduate and graduate collaborators.

  • Attend department meetings and participate in curriculum review, program assessment, and departmental initiatives.

  • Demonstrate a professional attitude, compassion, and commitment to student growth and learning.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skill

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and fostering an environment of respect and belonging.
  • Ability to teach effectively across in person, hybrid, and online formats.
  • Experience developing online course materials and/or innovative online experiential learning.
  • Experience with Canvas or similar learning management systems.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret student learning outcome data to improve teaching and learning
  • Experience working with non-traditional learners, adult learnings, and at-risk populations.
  • Ability to work in laboratory settings and maintain safety protocols.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Commitment to high academic standards and student centered teaching.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in biology, anatomy and physiology, or biology-related field preferred; master's degree in biology or a related field required.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success teaching introductory level biology lecture and laboratory courses including online and hybrid formats.
  • Experience teaching anatomy and physiology, general physiology, cell biology, and other related biology courses.
  • Track record of peer reviewed scholarship and/or externally funded research.
  • Experience with data science tools (e.g., genomics, bioinformatics, GIS).
  • Experience with coordinated assessment practices and shared course frameworks.
  • Experience teaching at the master's level a plus.
