Job description

Position Summary
The Senior Controls Technician is responsible for programming, commissioning, troubleshooting, servicing, and maintaining commercial HVAC Building Automation Systems (BAS). This position ensures control systems operate efficiently by performing system start-up, diagnostics, and commissioning while delivering exceptional customer service and quality workmanship.
As a technical expert, the Senior Controls Technician serves as a resource for other technicians by providing advanced troubleshooting support and may lead field activities on assigned projects. This role works closely with Project Managers, Programmers, Engineers, Account Managers, and customers to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and to the highest quality standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Program, configure, and download Building Automation Systems (BAS) for commercial HVAC control systems.
  • Install, test, start up, and commission control systems to ensure proper operation and compliance with project specifications.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex BAS, controls, and HVAC system issues both onsite and remotely.
  • Serve as the field technical expert, providing advanced troubleshooting support and guidance to other Controls Technicians.
  • Lead or coordinate field activities as assigned to ensure successful project execution.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Engineers, Programmers, and field personnel to ensure projects are completed on schedule and within scope.
  • Maintain and update project documentation, including control drawings, programming files, commissioning reports, and operation manuals.
  • Develop, maintain, and store database backups for customer BAS systems.
  • Provide technical expertise and support to Account Managers during project estimating and solution development.
  • Coordinate and conduct customer training on Building Automation Systems, including system operation and maintenance.
  • Complete start-up, commissioning, and project closeout documentation accurately and on time.
  • Resolve warranty and service-related controls issues while maintaining strong customer relationships.
  • Ensure all work complies with company policies, industry standards, and safety regulations.

Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Two-year technical training certificate with an emphasis in HVAC systems or completion of a union apprenticeship program preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and relevant work experience will be considered.

Experience
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of experience as a Controls Technician preferred.
  • Experience with commercial HVAC Building Automation Systems required.

Preferred Certifications
  • Tridium Certification preferred.
  • WebCTRL Certification preferred.

Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of commercial HVAC control systems, including platforms such as Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Automated Logic, Tridium, WebCTRL, or similar systems.
  • Advanced understanding of HVAC mechanical systems and sequence of operations.
  • Ability to program, commission, troubleshoot, and service Building Automation Systems.
  • Proficient with Windows-based laptop computers.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, and control schematics.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to mentor and support other technicians.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
