What is a web rater?

Web Raters are professionals who evaluate and assess the quality and relevance of web content, search engine results, advertisements, or social media feeds. They follow specific guidelines to determine how well online information meets user needs and search intent. Web Raters help improve algorithms used by search engines and tech companies to deliver better results to users. This role often requires strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and familiarity with internet culture.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a web rater?

To thrive as a Web Rater, you need strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and proficiency in internet research, typically with at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with web browsers, search engines, and proprietary rating platforms is often required, alongside passing a qualification exam provided by employers. Excellent time management, communication, and self-motivation are valuable soft skills for working independently and meeting productivity targets. These skills ensure that web raters can accurately evaluate search engine results and provide high-quality feedback to improve online content relevance.

What challenges do web raters face when evaluating online content?

Web Raters often encounter content that is ambiguous or lacks clear context, making it challenging to apply evaluation guidelines consistently. To overcome this, it's important to carefully review all provided instructions, use judgment while adhering to established criteria, and seek clarification from supervisors or team forums when in doubt. Regularly updating oneself with changes in guidelines and participating in team discussions can also help ensure accurate and consistent ratings. Being detail-oriented and open to feedback will further enhance performance in this role.

About Right Side Up

Please note, this posting is to highlight joining Right Side Up's talent collective specifically and is not representing an internal full-time role, or a current opportunity with a client.

Right Side Up is a collective of premium marketing talent-with all of the marketing chops, and none of the agency fluff. We're trusted by the most respected early-stage ventures, the fastest-growing tech companies, and well-established Fortune 500 teams to do one thing better: Growth. We have over 250+ clients including Stitch Fix, Sephora, Yelp, Sun Basket, Crunchbase, DoorDash, Calm, and more.

About the Role

We're seeking freelance Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) Consultants to join our talent collective and support a range of clients across industries. This role is ideal for marketers who are passionate about improving user experiences and driving measurable impact through testing, analysis, and experimentation.

Projects may include auditing conversion funnels, developing testing roadmaps, running A/B and multivariate tests, and optimizing user journeys across web and mobile. Contract engagements typically range from 10-40 hours per week.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze user behavior and conversion funnels to identify drop-off points and opportunities for improvement

  • Develop and execute A/B and multivariate testing programs

  • Create testing roadmaps aligned to business goals and hypotheses

  • Partner with design, product, and engineering teams to implement experiments

  • Optimize landing pages, product pages, and key conversion flows

  • Use tools such as Optimizely, VWO, Hotjar, and similar platforms to run tests and gather insights, and leverage tools like Webflow to implement and iterate on on-site experiences

  • Leverage qualitative and quantitative data (heatmaps, session recordings, surveys, analytics) to inform decisions

  • Report on test results and translate findings into actionable recommendations

Requirements
  • Strong foundation in CRO, experimentation, and user behavior analysis

  • Experience designing and executing A/B or multivariate tests

  • Familiarity with experimentation and analytics tools (e.g., Optimizely, VWO, Google Analytics, Hotjar)

  • Ability to form hypotheses and prioritize tests based on potential impact

  • Understanding of UX/UI principles and their impact on conversion

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to communicate results and insights clearly to stakeholders

  • Comfort working across different industries, products, and customer journeys

Nice to Have
  • Experience with personalization and dynamic content strategies

  • Familiarity with statistical significance and experiment design

  • Experience in high-growth startup environments

  • Experience supporting both strategic planning and hands-on execution

We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans. If you would like more information about how your data is processed, please contact us.
