What is a web developer manager?

A Web Developer Manager is a professional responsible for leading and managing a team of web developers. They oversee the planning, development, and maintenance of websites or web applications, ensuring projects are completed on time and meet quality standards. In addition to technical expertise, they coordinate project tasks, mentor team members, and serve as a liaison between developers and other stakeholders. Their role often includes setting development standards, implementing best practices, and staying updated with the latest web technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web developer manager?

To thrive as a Web Developer Manager, you need a strong background in web development, team leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), web frameworks (such as React or Angular), and version control systems (like Git) is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentorship abilities help you guide your team and foster collaboration. These skills ensure that development projects are delivered efficiently, meet business goals, and encourage a productive and motivated team environment.

How does a web developer manager typically balance hands-on coding with leadership responsibilities?

As a Web Developer Manager, you are often required to strike a balance between leading your team and participating in technical work. While your primary focus will be on managing projects, mentoring team members, and coordinating with stakeholders, many organizations expect you to stay technically involved—such as guiding architectural decisions or reviewing code. The balance can vary depending on the company's size and structure, but effective Web Developer Managers allocate time for both strategic leadership and hands-on technical tasks to maintain credibility and ensure project success.

Job DescriptionOverview

AtkinsRealis is seeking a Web Application Developer to join our Technology Solutions team. This role will support a portfolio of existing FDOT District 2 web applications, SharePoint solutions, Power Apps, Power Automate workflows, and related production support needs.

Your role
  • Support the Technology Solutions team in maintaining, troubleshooting, and enhancing existing FDOT District 2 public-facing, internal, and client-facing applications and business systems.

  • Provide application support across traditional .NET web applications, SharePoint Online sites and lists, Power Apps, Power Automate flows, Microsoft Forms, and Microsoft 365-based business processes.

  • Assist with developing web applications using C#, ASP.NET MVC, .NET, SQL Server, and Entity Framework.

  • Work with existing application codebases to implement new features, resolve defects, and improve application functionality, usability, and maintainability.

  • Support inherited and legacy systems by learning existing configurations, documenting current behavior, fulfilling enhancement requests, and minimizing disruption to production users.

  • Develop and maintain database queries, application data models, and integrations using SQL Server, Entity Framework, and LINQ.

  • Create, maintain, and troubleshoot SharePoint lists, document libraries, permissions, views, customized forms, and related Microsoft 365 data sources used by FDOT business applications.

  • Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot Power Apps and Power Automate flows, including connectors, triggers, run-only permissions, app and flow ownership, error handling, notifications, and SharePoint-backed workflows.

  • Support front-end development and maintenance using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Bootstrap, and responsive web design practices.

  • Use Visual Studio to develop, debug, test, and maintain web applications.

  • Use Git-based source control to clone repositories, create branches, commit changes, merge updates, resolve basic conflicts, and participate in pull request workflows.

  • Assist with deploying, configuring, and troubleshooting web applications hosted in Microsoft IIS and Windows Server environments.

  • Help diagnose technical issues across application, web server, database, and browser layers.

  • Respond to production support requests, triage defects, investigate root causes, coordinate fixes, document resolutions, and communicate status to internal project leaders and FDOT stakeholders.

  • Coordinate with FDOT Office of Information Technology, SharePoint administrators, Power Platform administrators, and project stakeholders when access, environment, security, deployment, or tenant-specific issues require client-side support.

  • Collaborate with developers, analysts, project managers, FDOT staff, and other technical team members to understand requirements, support existing processes, and deliver practical solutions across web, SharePoint, and Power Platform environments.

  • Prepare and maintain documentation for application features, SharePoint and Power Platform configurations, data sources, deployment processes, permissions, inventory of flows and apps, issue resolutions, and development procedures.

  • Follow team standards for coding, testing, source control, security, accessibility, documentation, and application support.

About you
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Web Development, Data Science, or a related technical field; or equivalent practical experience developing, maintaining, or supporting web applications, SharePoint solutions, Power Platform solutions, or related business systems.

  • Preferred 5-10 years of professional experience.

  • Experience developing, maintaining, or troubleshooting web applications through coursework, internships, personal projects, or professional experience.

  • Experience or familiarity with C#, ASP.NET MVC, .NET, Visual Studio, SQL Server, and Entity Framework or Entity Framework Core is preferred.

  • Familiarity with front-end web technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Bootstrap, and responsive web design.

  • Basic experience with Git and source-control repository workflows, including branching, committing, merging, and pull requests.

  • Exposure to IIS, Windows Server, application deployments, or web server configuration is preferred.

  • Experience or familiarity with SharePoint Online, Microsoft Lists, Power Apps, Power Automate, Microsoft Forms, Microsoft 365 connectors, and SharePoint-backed business workflows is preferred.

  • Experience supporting production applications, troubleshooting user-reported issues, documenting fixes, and working with client IT teams or controlled government technology environments is preferred.

  • Familiarity with Linux, Node.js, npm, PostgreSQL, REST APIs, or CI/CD practices is helpful but not required.

  • Ability to understand and work within an existing codebase while making careful, well-documented changes.

  • Basic understanding of object-oriented programming, web application architecture, database-driven applications, and the software development lifecycle.

  • Ability to troubleshoot issues across application, database, server, and browser layers.

  • Ability to work in client-controlled environments where access, permissions, VPN, security, deployment, and system-owner coordination may affect delivery.

  • Familiarity with relational database concepts and the ability to write and understand basic SQL queries.

  • Basic understanding of responsive design, browser compatibility, usability, and web accessibility practices.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, documentation, and communication skills.

  • Detail-oriented and comfortable collaborating with developers, analysts, project managers, and other technical professionals.

  • Comfortable communicating with technical and non-technical stakeholders, asking clarifying questions, documenting decisions, and providing clear status updates.

  • Ability to learn unfamiliar technologies and development environments and apply feedback constructively.

  • Interest in application development, web technologies, digital transformation, automation, data, and emerging technologies.
