Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced developers and may assist with coding, testing, debugging, and designing web pages. This role provides valuable hands-on exposure to industry tools, programming languages, and best practices while helping interns develop their technical and teamwork skills. Successful completion of a web developer internship can enhance a candidate's resume and increase their chances of securing a full-time web development role.

What are the typical projects and tasks assigned to a web developer intern, and how do they contribute to the overall team?

Web developer interns often work on a variety of tasks such as assisting with website updates, debugging code, creating new web pages, and implementing design changes under the guidance of senior developers. These projects allow interns to gain hands-on experience with web technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and sometimes frameworks like React or Angular. Interns usually collaborate closely with designers, back-end developers, and project managers, contributing to real-world projects that impact the organization's digital presence. This collaborative environment helps interns develop both technical skills and an understanding of professional workflows, setting a strong foundation for future career growth.

Job description

High School Internship

The Opportunity:

Internships at Idaho National Laboratory

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) hosts a limited number of high school students each year to support INL's mission.  Opportunities for interns at INL range from nuclear engineering to cybersecurity and include non-scientific positions in various operations and business disciplines.

Join INL's team and find your exceptional educational experience in a real-world work environment.  INL offers a unique opportunity to learn, collaborate, innovate and conduct research with top researchers and professionals.

The Deliverables:

Interns will spend the first week of their assignment working with their mentor to outline their work scope and to secure resources for a successful internship.  For the next several weeks, the mentor will provide considerable program assistance and guidance to the intern.  In addition to regular activities, interns are invited to attend weekly seminars, tours and community events designed with career development in mind.  Completion of a final project is highly recommended and can be completed through a variety of mediums - a traditional poster, electronic presentation or video.

The Process:

Through this single application, you are considered for all high school internship projects related to INL. Simply complete the application questions. It is common for applicants to receive consideration for multiple projects at varying times throughout the process. Mentors will make direct contact with applicants who meet their project qualifications to share the specific details of the project. Most summer high school internships provide flexibility with start and end dates to account for summer vacation plans.  We encourage early application to increase the number of opportunities available to you.

The Projects:

INL high school interns work directly with INL employees on multiple projects. Examples of previous high school internship projects are below:

  •      Support National User Facility Project and Process Demonstration Unit (PDU) data collection and analysis.  This will involve sample and data collection, data evaluation and interpretation, data and sample management, and presentation of results.  Most of the work will be done in excel.  As part of the sample analysis, the intern will perform moisture, density, and particle size analysis.
  •      Assist with the operation of the INL High Performance Computing systems. Work will involve computer programming, scripting, web development, and the implementation of tools to aid in system management.
  •      Define and develop a web-page for the Research Library. This would include working with the library staff, the mission orgs, and college interns to understand how research is conducted and understand what needs they have to conduct research. Additionally, there is an opportunity to help in the library in developing a process map of the applications and tools available at the library.
  •      Scan and document isotope releases from stack monitoring reports from the Materials Fuel Complex (MFC).  These will be correlated with fuels and test samples undergoing examination in these facilities to see if there are correlations with dissolution, pin puncturing and sampling.  The student will learn the mathematics of correlations and advanced data analysis and presentation.
  •      Data analysis of system events to provide resiliency metrics, predictive analytics, and health assessment of cyber security systems at the Idaho National Laboratory.  This position will include opportunities to conduct and analyze cyber security investigations and incident response processes.  The final capstone deliverable of the position will be to have an executive level dashboard of cyber significant activities that will be available in real time to key stakeholders of Cyber Security at the Idaho National Laboratory.

Required Qualifications:

All Internship Candidates Must:

  • Have the ability to pass a background check
  • Possess a minimum overall 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • Complete this application, which is used to place students based on their academic interests, coursework, knowledge and communication skills
  • Enrolled full time student status at an accredited high school program
  • Preference will be provided to local high school students
  • Preference will be provided to graduating high school seniors, junior complete and students heading into their junior year of high school
  • Must be 16 years of age

Helpful Tips to Prepare You for Your INL Internship Application:
  1. Current resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  2. Unofficial transcripts (include current and completed degree programs)
  3. Current class schedule and number of credits

Recommendations:

  • Work with your school counselor to develop a resume (this is your opportunity for a first impression)
  • Review the INL website and learn more about our research and business programs and how they could enrich your degree plan https://www.inl.gov/
  • Review the INL University Partnerships web site for valuable information on our internship programs https://www.inl.gov/inl-initiatives/education
