What is a web developer contract?

A Web Developer Contract is a legal agreement between a client and a web developer outlining the terms, responsibilities, deliverables, timeline, and payment for web development services. This contract protects both parties by clearly defining the scope of work, deadlines, and any intellectual property rights. It typically covers specifics such as website functionality, design, maintenance, and post-launch support. Having a contract helps to prevent misunderstandings and ensures that both the client and developer are aligned on expectations.

What are web developer contract jobs?

Web developer contract jobs involve the design or development of websites. In these positions, you work on different projects on a contract or freelance basis. Your duties depend on the type of development projects on which you work. As a front-end web developer, you work on the user interface, and your responsibilities focus on creating the visual and interactive elements of a web page or application. As a back-end developer, you may use SQL, PHP, or other languages to perform server-side development and connect the website to a database.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web developer contractor?

To thrive as a Web Developer Contractor, you need strong proficiency in programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and relevant frameworks, supported by a portfolio of completed projects. Familiarity with version control systems such as Git, content management systems (CMS), and sometimes certifications like AWS Certified Developer can be valuable. Excellent problem-solving abilities, time management, and effective client communication are standout soft skills for this role. These capabilities are essential to deliver high-quality web solutions efficiently, meet client expectations, and adapt to diverse project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by web developers working on a contract basis, and how can they be managed?

Contract web developers often encounter challenges such as rapidly adapting to new codebases, aligning with different teams' workflows, and managing client expectations within tight deadlines. Effectively communicating with stakeholders, clarifying project requirements early, and staying organized with project management tools can help mitigate these challenges. Additionally, being proactive in seeking feedback and documenting work thoroughly ensures smoother collaboration and successful project delivery.

Job description

Job Title: Application Developer
Location: Remote (Occasional on-site meetings in Oklahoma as needed)
Experience Level: Mid–Senior Level (3–5+ years experience)

Overview

The Teachers’ Retirement System of Oklahoma (TRS) is embarking on a comprehensive, multi-year modernization initiative to replace legacy platforms (including the retirement of the legacy ALICE system) and transition to a unified, cloud-native environment.

WiredPeople is seeking two (2) Senior Full Stack Developers to join the engineering team in building MyPAS 3.0, a modern Azure-hosted pension administration system that integrates seamlessly with MyTRS and MyERS. TRS serves over 210,000 active members and retirees across more than 600 school districts, higher education institutions, and state tech centers.

In this role, you will work on a modern technology stack—including Angular 16+, C# .NET, Web APIs, Azure SQL Managed Instances, Azure Function Apps, and Azure DevOps—to build scalable, secure, and maintainable software that directly supports state pension operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Full Lifecycle Application Development: Design, code, unit test, review, and maintain web applications and services meeting complex business and technical requirements.

  • Modernization & Integration: Develop RESTful Web APIs, system interfaces, and automated workflows to transition legacy workflows into cloud-native Azure solutions.

  • Agile Collaboration: Participate actively in SDLC processes using Agile methodologies; develop user stories, define acceptance criteria, and maintain a prioritized backlog in Azure DevOps.

  • Code Reviews & Quality Assurance: Submit clean pull requests for TRS staff review, write comprehensive unit tests, and maintain software with minimal technical debt and defects.

  • Cross-Functional Teamwork: Collaborate closely with TRS technical architects, business analysts, QA testers, and project managers to translate complex functional requirements into production-ready solutions.

  • Documentation & Standards: Maintain thorough system documentation, adhering to modern secure coding practices and project engineering standards.

Required Technical Skills & Qualifications
  • Core Stack:

    • C# .NET (Proficient in modern .NET core framework development)

    • Angular 16+ (Hands-on SPA development, TypeScript, RxJS)

    • RESTful Web API Development

    • SQL / Database Development (Query optimization, relational schema design, Azure SQL)

    • Git & Version Control

    • Azure DevOps (CI/CD pipelines, backlog management, work item tracking)

  • Education & Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), or related field with 3–5+ years of software development experience (or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience).

Knowledge & Professional Competencies
  • Strong knowledge of modern application development frameworks, cloud architecture patterns, and secure coding practices.

  • Solid understanding of Agile/Scrum software development lifecycles (SDLC).

  • Familiarity with legacy system migration strategies, business process analysis, and functional design principles.

  • Ability to deliver high-quality, production-ready code with minimal defect rates.

  • Outstanding communication skills to explain technical concepts clearly to both technical peers and non-technical stakeholders.

Location, Schedule & Travel Details
  • Work Location: Remote-first within the United States.

  • On-Site Attendance: Occasional in-person attendance may be required for key project meetings or governance sessions.

  • Travel Expense Notice: Pursuant to the Central Purchasing Act (74 O.S. § 85.40), travel expenses will not be reimbursed separately and must be factored into contract rates.
