What is the difference between Web Crawler Developer vs Data Engineer?

AspectWeb Crawler DeveloperData Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science, programming skillsBachelor's in CS, data management certifications
Work EnvironmentWeb development, scripting, backend systemsData pipelines, database management, cloud platforms
Industry UsageWeb scraping, search engines, data collectionData processing, analytics, big data infrastructure
Search & Comparison IntentFocus on web crawling, data extractionFocus on data storage, transformation, and analysis

The Web Crawler Developer primarily designs and maintains web crawlers to extract data from websites, focusing on web scraping and data collection. In contrast, Data Engineers build and manage data pipelines and infrastructure to process and store large datasets. While both roles require programming skills and work with data, Web Crawler Developers specialize in web-based data extraction, whereas Data Engineers focus on data integration and management across systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web Crawler Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Crawler Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python or Java, experience with web protocols, and a solid understanding of data extraction and parsing techniques. Familiarity with tools such as Scrapy, BeautifulSoup, Selenium, and knowledge of APIs and database management are commonly required, along with expertise in handling large-scale data. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help developers manage complex crawling tasks and collaborate with teams. These skills are crucial to efficiently gather, process, and maintain high-quality web data while navigating technical and ethical challenges.

What are some common challenges Web Crawler Developers face when extracting data from modern websites?

Web Crawler Developers often encounter challenges such as dynamic content loaded via JavaScript, frequent changes to website structures, and anti-scraping measures like CAPTCHAs or rate limiting. Staying up-to-date with new web technologies and adapting crawlers to handle Single Page Applications (SPAs) is crucial. Additionally, collaborating closely with data analysts or product teams ensures that the extracted data meets quality and compliance standards.

What is a Web Crawler Developer?

A Web Crawler Developer is a software engineer who specializes in designing, building, and maintaining web crawlers or web scraping tools. These tools automatically browse the internet and extract data from websites for various applications, such as search engines, data analytics, and market research. Web Crawler Developers often work with programming languages like Python, Java, or Node.js and must be knowledgeable about web protocols, data parsing, and ethical considerations related to web scraping.

Job description

Product Owner – AEO / GEO Consultant (AI Search Visibility)

Location: Alameda, CA ( 100% onsite)

Duration: 6 Months

Role Summary

We are looking for a Product Owner to own and drive our Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) program. This person is accountable for how the brand shows up across AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot, and similar), monitoring visibility and share-of-voice through tools such as Profound, translating insights into a prioritized backlog, and orchestrating delivery across SEO, content, and engineering teams. The role sits at the intersection of product ownership, analytics, and stakeholder management.

Key Responsibilities

Monitoring & Measurement

  • Continuously monitor AEO/GEO performance using Profound (and comparable platforms) — tracking brand mentions, citations, share-of-voice, sentiment, and answer accuracy across AI engines.
  • Own and maintain the AEO/GEO dashboard as the single source of truth; ensure data quality, define KPIs, and surface trends, regressions, and competitive movements.
  • Run regular prompt/query monitoring to detect gaps, hallucinations, missing citations, or competitor displacement in AI answers.

Backlog & Delivery Orchestration

  • Convert monitoring insights into clearly scoped, well-prioritized JIRA tickets with acceptance criteria, routing work to the right team (content authoring, technical SEO, AEM/web engineering, data/structured-markup).
  • Own, groom, and prioritize the AEO/GEO product backlog; balance quick wins against structural improvements (structured data, llms.txt, crawler policy, content depth, entity coverage).
  • Track tickets through to closure, validate fixes against the dashboard, and confirm measurable visibility uplift.

Stakeholder Communication

  • Act as the primary point of contact between business stakeholders, marketing leadership, agencies/vendors, and delivery teams.
  • Translate technical AEO/GEO concepts into business outcomes; present performance, roadmap, and ROI in executive-ready terms.
  • Run cadence reviews (weekly stand-ups, monthly business reviews), manage expectations, and align priorities across functions.

Strategy & Roadmap

  • Define and evolve the AEO/GEO roadmap in line with business goals and the changing AI-search landscape.
  • Benchmark against competitors and recommend interventions to improve visibility and citation share.
  • Stay current on AI engine behavior, ranking signals, and emerging optimization techniques.

Required Qualifications

  • 4+ years in product ownership, SEO/digital marketing, or web analytics, with at least 1–2 years exposure to AEO/GEO or AI-search visibility.
  • Hands-on experience with AEO/GEO monitoring tools (Profound, Otterly, Peec, Scrunch, BrightEdge, Conductor, or equivalent).
  • Strong working knowledge of technical SEO and AI-search fundamentals: structured data/schema, llms.txt, AI crawler policy, hreflang, content/entity optimization.
  • Proficiency with JIRA (or similar) for backlog management, ticket creation, and agile delivery.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills; able to brief both executives and engineers.
  • Strong analytics acumen — fluent in interpreting dashboards and web/marketing analytics (e.g., GA4, Adobe Analytics), defining KPIs, and making data-driven prioritization calls.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in enterprise or regulated industries (e.g., pharma, healthcare, financial services), including compliance-aware content workflows.
  • AEM or other enterprise CMS / DXP background a strong added advantage (e.g., AEM / AEMaaCS, Contentful), including familiarity with multi-market / multi-locale site operations.
  • Experience coordinating across distributed, cross-functional teams (content, SEO analysts, QA, infra, engineering).
  • Agile / Scrum certification (CSPO, PSPO) a plus.
