What does a web accessibility analyst do?

A Web Accessibility Analyst ensures that websites and digital content are accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. They review and test websites for compliance with accessibility standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and Section 508. Their role often involves auditing websites, providing recommendations for improvements, collaborating with developers and designers, and sometimes training staff on accessibility best practices. The goal is to make digital information usable by everyone, regardless of physical or cognitive abilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web accessibility analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Accessibility Analyst, you need a solid understanding of WCAG guidelines, HTML/CSS, ARIA standards, and accessibility testing methodologies, often supported by a relevant degree or certification such as CPACC or WAS. Familiarity with assistive technologies, accessibility auditing tools (like Axe or WAVE), and content management systems is essential. Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying issues and collaborating with development teams. These competencies ensure digital products are usable by all individuals, fostering inclusivity and legal compliance.

How does a web accessibility analyst typically collaborate with designers and developers to ensure accessible digital products?

Web Accessibility Analysts work closely with designers and developers throughout the project lifecycle to identify and address potential accessibility barriers. They often participate in design reviews, provide guidance on best practices, and perform audits using both automated tools and manual testing methods. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as analysts translate accessibility standards into actionable recommendations and help teams implement solutions that comply with guidelines like WCAG. This collaborative approach not only improves accessibility but also fosters a culture of inclusion within the organization.
