Job description

Water Resources Engineer โ€“ Floodplain & Dam Safety

Our client is seeking a Water Resources Engineer to join its growing Water Resources team in the greater Northern Virginia / Washington, DC region. This role offers the opportunity to support a variety of floodplain and dam-related projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

The selected candidate will work on hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) modeling, floodplain permitting, dam safety evaluations, and related water resources engineering assignments. Projects will include FEMA and local floodplain studies, dam breach analyses, floodplain crossings, and permitting support for state-regulated dams in Virginia and Maryland.

This position provides strong long-term growth potential within a collaborative engineering environment, with additional exposure to stormwater management design, permitting, and related water resources services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and support HEC-RAS hydraulic models using GIS, survey, and as-built data
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and assist with model calibration
  • Prepare floodplain studies, CLOMR/LOMR packages, and permitting documentation
  • Assist with dam breach inundation studies, hazard assessments, and flood mapping
  • Support preparation of emergency action plans and technical reports
  • Assist with design of floodplain crossings and dam rehabilitation projects
  • Conduct site visits and support floodplain and dam inspections
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies and assist with permit approvalsResearch applicable codes, regulations, and engineering standards
  • Manage project tasks and support multiple concurrent assignments
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline
  • 2+ years of experience with HEC-RAS modeling and water resources engineering
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities
  • Experience with GIS platforms such as ArcMap or similar software
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality deliverables
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM)
  • Experience with HEC-RAS 2D modeling
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or related design software
