Manager Hydrodynamic Modeling information

What are some common challenges faced by a Manager Hydrodynamic Modeling when leading multidisciplinary teams on large projects?

A Manager Hydrodynamic Modeling often coordinates teams comprising engineers, modelers, and environmental scientists, which can present challenges in aligning different technical perspectives and ensuring clear communication. Managing project timelines and balancing the accuracy of models with client deadlines is another common hurdle. Additionally, staying current with emerging modeling software and integrating new data sources can require ongoing training and adaptability. Effective collaboration and strong leadership skills are essential to navigate these complexities and deliver successful project outcomes.

What is the difference between Manager Hydrodynamic Modeling vs Hydrodynamic Modeler?

AspectManager Hydrodynamic ModelingHydrodynamic Modeler
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Civil, Mechanical, or Ocean Engineering; experience in project managementBachelor's or Master's in Civil, Mechanical, Ocean, or Environmental Engineering; specialized modeling skills
Work EnvironmentLeads teams, manages projects, coordinates with stakeholdersPerforms modeling tasks, develops simulations, analyzes data
Industry UsageOversees hydrodynamic projects in water resources, coastal engineeringExecutes modeling work within similar projects, often under supervision

The main difference is that the Manager Hydrodynamic Modeling oversees projects and teams, focusing on management and coordination, while the Hydrodynamic Modeler concentrates on technical modeling tasks and data analysis. Both roles require relevant engineering credentials, but the manager role emphasizes leadership and project oversight.

What does a Manager Hydrodynamic Modeling do?

A Manager Hydrodynamic Modeling oversees teams responsible for simulating and analyzing water movement in natural and engineered environments, such as rivers, oceans, reservoirs, and coastal areas. They lead the development and validation of hydrodynamic models, interpret simulation results, and provide insights for engineering, environmental, or policy projects. Additionally, they coordinate with other professionals, ensure project timelines are met, and stay updated with the latest modeling tools and techniques.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manager Hydrodynamic Modeling, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manager Hydrodynamic Modeling, you need a strong background in civil or environmental engineering, hydrodynamics, and fluid mechanics, typically supported by an advanced degree and relevant work experience. Familiarity with modeling software such as HEC-RAS, MIKE, or Delft3D, and experience with GIS and data analysis tools are essential, along with certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. Leadership, project management, and effective communication are key soft skills for managing teams and collaborating with stakeholders. These competencies ensure successful delivery of complex modeling projects, informed decision-making, and high-quality outcomes in water resources management.

The ideal candidate will bring expertise in naval architecture, hydrodynamics, and structural design, as well as experience applying Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles and modeling and simulation (M&S) tools to support engineering analysis, system integration, and lifecycle development.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead concept development, hull form design, and systems integration for manned and unmanned marine platforms.
  • Conduct hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, seakeeping, and stability assessments, including intact and damaged conditions.
  • Perform structural survivability evaluations to assess compliance with mission performance, strength, and environmental load requirements.
  • Support and interpret model testing, tank trials, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations.
  • Ensure design compliance with applicable standards including ABS, USCG, and NAVSEA specifications.
  • Apply MBSE methodologies (e.g., SysML/Cameo) to integrate system models with naval architecture design and requirements management.
  • Develop and deliver technical data packages, including hull drawings, stability reports, weight estimates, CFD validation summaries, and compliance documentation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams (systems, mechanical, electrical, and software) throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Participate in technical reviews, Integrated Product Teams (IPTs), and stakeholder meetings.

Requirements:

  • Must be a US citizen.
  • Must have an active SECRET clearance.
  • MA, in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or a closely related engineering field.

  • Proficiency in hull and structural design software: Orca3D, Rhino, GHS, NAPA.
  • Experience with CAD tools (Ship Constructor, AutoCAD), CFD tools (Star-CCM+, OpenFOAM), and structural analysis tools (FEMAP, NASTRAN).
  • Demonstrated experience applying MBSE tools and methodologies such as SysML and Cameo.
  • Familiarity with Navy, USCG, and classification society standards (e.g., ABS, DNV).
  • Excellent technical writing, reporting, and communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of hydrodynamics, hydrostatics, weight estimation, stability analysis, and structural design methods relevant to manned and unmanned maritime platforms.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and generating technical drawings, design specifications, and simulation outputs.
  • Successful background and drug screening check.

Preferred Requirements:
